Kunming Medical University

Founded in 1933 as the medical specialist division of Donglu University, Kunming Medical University is a key provincial university located in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. The medical school became an independent institution in 1956, began awarding master’s degrees in 1981 and doctoral degrees in 1998. Yunnan Medical College was later incorporated in 2010, before the institution adopted its current name in 2012. 

It operates across three campuses within Kunming City: Chenggong, Renmin West Road, and Pingzheng. The university has trained more than 100,000 full-time and 100,000 part-time health professionals and currently has more than 23,000 full-time students enrolled across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes.

Academically, the university comprises 18 schools and departments and offers 36 undergraduate programmes, alongside five doctoral-level disciplines and seven master’s-level professional degree programmes. 

Its academic strengths lie in clinical medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing and public health. 

Internationalisation is another key feature of KMU. The university began admitting international students in 1997 and has since educated students from more than 60 countries. It was also the first university in Yunnan authorised to offer an English-taught undergraduate programme in clinical medicine. 

KMU helped establish the South and Southeast Asia Medical Education and Health Care Alliance, bringing together institutions from 13 countries and strengthening its role as a regional hub for medical education and healthcare cooperation.
