Founded in 1876, Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is a private research university based in Baltimore, Maryland. It takes its name from its first benefactor, the American abolitionist, philanthropist and entrepreneur, Johns Hopkins.

The university’s motto is ‘Knowledge for the world.’

JHU serves more than 21,000 students through nine academic divisions: Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Whiting School of Engineering, Carey Business School, School of Education, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Peabody Institute (for music), Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.

The university has four campuses in Baltimore with regional satellite campuses throughout Maryland, and a biotech hub north of Washington, DC.

It has a presence in more than 150 countries including Argentina, France, China, Italy and Singapore, and an extensive study abroad programme. Medical and nursing students can take medical electives in 19 countries and all students pursuing a BA in general engineering are encouraged to spend at least one semester studying abroad.

More than 3,000 of the university’s students are international, totalling 20 per cent of the student body, and representing 120 different countries.

The university counts 36 Nobel Laureates among past and present faculty and students.

Other notable alumni include Woodrow Wilson, 28th president of the USA, the journalist PJ O’Rourke, film director Wes Craven, and the Pulitzer Prize–winning columnist Russell Baker.

University sports teams are known as the Blue Jays. Their team colours are blue and black and the blue jay bird, native to North America, is the team’s official mascot.

Once a working-class port, Baltimore is now a thriving, culturally diverse city (Maryland’s largest) that has acquired the nickname ‘Charm City’.

Its main campus comprises red-brick buildings, an iconic clock tower and vast areas of woodland.

The Role The Head of Strategic Planning provides expert advice and guidance to faculties and senior stakeholders, ensuring local plans align with and support delivery of the University Strategy. The role oversees the annual planning cycle, student number planning, KPI reporting, and related activity, working in partnership across the University. The role includes line management of a team of four and works closely with Senior Strategic Planning Managers and department colleagues to coordinate and deliver planning activity. This includes developing, monitoring, and reviewing performance frameworks and KPIs, using evidence‑informed insight to assess progress and identify areas for improvement. The postholder will seek opportunities to improve processes, working with the team to carry out qualitative and quantitative analysis to support decision‑making, bringing together data from multiple internal and external sources. This includes undertaking sector benchmarking and analysis to identify strengths, risks, and opportunities. Working closely with Finance, Faculty Operations, and Professional Services teams, the role contributes to process design, business cases, and investment proposals. It also supports strategic reviews and strategy renewal, monitoring policy, funding, and regulatory developments and communicating their implications clearly. About You This role would suit a thoughtful and approachable professional motivated by supporting a complex organisation to achieve its goals. You will bring experience in strategic planning within a complex environment, with the ability to connect institutional priorities with local delivery. The role requires sound judgement and strong relationship‑building skills to work effectively with senior academic leaders and Professional Services colleagues. You will be comfortable offering constructive input and different perspectives where helpful. Strong analytical capability is important, alongside the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and adapt messages for different audiences. Salary Package: $112,550 (LEVEL A.6) p.a. plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading -Appointment Type: Full-time, 2 years fixed term Location: Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus (North Ryde) Join a multi-disciplinary team aiming to systematically investigate nutrient uptake and metabolism in a fast growing cyanobacterium. Nutrient uptake pathways in cyanobacteria are poorly understood, yet they are critical for understanding ocean carbon cycling and for harnessing cyanobacteria in biomanufacturing. The Macquarie University, School of Natural Sciences, is currently seeking a suitably qualified Research Fellow to join a multi-disciplinary team working to decode cyanobacterial nutrient uptake systems in collaboration with the University of Queensland, the Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. This work, supported by an ARC Discovery Project, integrates protein biochemistry, physiological characterisation, cyanobacterial genetic engineering, high throughput functional genomics, transcriptomics and stable isotope resolved metabolomics. The successful applicant will work with Distinguished Professor Ian Paulsen, Professor Esteban Marcellin, Dr Bhumika Shah and Dr Alescia Cullen to: Construct a cyanobacterial deletion mutant library of nutrient uptake genes using biofoundry automation Compare the growth and physiology of wildtype strains and mutants Utilise functional genomics, transcriptomics and metabolomics to resolve metabolic pathways and regulatory networks Provide day to day support to HDR students and collaborate closely with chief investigators to ensure the timely delivery of the project milestones Initiate and maintain academic and industry collaborations, and apply for research funding Communicate research findings in scientific journals and at conferences About You You will have completed a PhD in molecular biology, microbiology, synthetic biology, systems biology or a closely related discipline.
