About Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia

Formerly the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute, Herzen State Pedagogical University takes its origins from one of the oldest teacher training institutions in Russia.

Today, the university is named after the 19th century Russian writer and philosopher Alexander Herzen. Often referred to as the “father of Russian socialism", Herzen was a key contributor to the ideological sect of agrarian populism and was exiled to London in the UK in 1852.

The university can trace its history back to 1797, when the institute was founded on the basic principles of consistency in education. In 1864 a pedagogical college was created on the site for rural students to train them as teachers of public schools and colleges, and in 1868 a women’s college was set up to train nurses and teachers.

Today, the university comprises five institutes, 21 faculties with over 130 departments, and three main research centres. Its student body is made up of around 14,000 national and 2,000 international undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Herzen State Pedagogical University boasts one of the largest university libraries in Russia, alongside geological, anatomical and zoological museums. Campus facilities available to students include a fitness centre and bar, not to mention the variety of cultural entertainment on offer in the city itself.

Situated in the heart of St Petersburg, the university boasts excellent transport links and surrounding attractions, including the famous Winter Palace and Russian ballet theatres.

The university was ranked in the top 200 for Gender Equality and Quality Education in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for 2020.

A number of well known psychologists, astronomers, geologists and historians make up the university’s list of notable alumni, as well as the Russian poet Alexander Kushner.
