The Department of Mechanical Engineering Science offers the ECSA accredited Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (BEng) programme, and the Master’s and PhD in Engineering postgraduate programmes. The candidate will be expected to teach, perform research, supervise students and participate in services required by the Department. Responsibilities: Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in mechanical engineering disciplines including, but not limited to: Design, Thermodynamics, Graphical Communications, Thermofluids, Theory of Machines, Thermomachines, Manufacturing Methods, Sustainable Energy, and related areas. Demonstrated computer literacy in relevant mechanical engineering software packages (e.g., SolidWorks, ANSYS, MATLAB/Mathematica, LabVIEW, or equivalent). Conduct research activities, publish in accredited peer-reviewed journals, and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and laboratory work. Participate actively in departmental academic and administrative duties, including invigilation, committee participation, curriculum development, and quality assurance processes. Supervise postgraduate students at Master’s and Doctoral levels. Engage with industry stakeholders to develop collaborative research projects, student opportunities, and funding partnerships. Participate in community engagement initiatives aligned with Faculty and University strategic objectives. We are now looking for a Doctoral Researcher in Structural Health Monitoring and Condition Assessment. We are seeking a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher in Structural Health Monitoring and Condition Assessment of Bridges to join the Structural and Bridge Engineering Research Group in the Department of Civil Engineering at Aalto University. Your role and goals The successful candidate will conduct doctoral research at the intersection of structural engineering and artificial intelligence. The research will focus on advancing methods for monitoring, assessing, and managing civil infrastructure through innovative sensing technologies and data-driven approaches. The research topics include: Structural health monitoring of bridges and other civil infrastructure Finite element analysis Laboratory and field-based structural testing and data acquisition Direct and indirect sensing methods for bridges, including remote sensing techniques Machine learning and artificial intelligence for infrastructure condition assessment Damage detection and software/application development for structural assessment The doctoral degree will be awarded upon successful completion of advanced doctoral coursework (30 ECTS), preparation of an article-based doctoral dissertation, and a successful public defence of the thesis. During the duration of the doctoral studies, the researcher will be expected to present publish in leading academic journals and high-level scientific conferences, engage in teaching-related duties, actively participate in the research group activities, assist in the preparation of new research proposals, and help to advise master’s students during the preparation of their final project. The research will involve extensive large-scale structural testing in both laboratory and field environments, as well as the development and application of direct and indirect (e.g., drive-by) structural health monitoring approaches. Description The Water Research Center at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a post-doctoral associate to work on "Application of Membrane Desalination to Treat Water from UAE Feed Sources," under the supervision of Professor Nidal Hilal, Director of the Water Research Center and Global Professor of Engineering and Professor Raed Hashaikeh, Professor of Mechanical Engineering. The successful applicant will lead an innovative project focused on developing advanced, high-flux membrane technologies tailored to the unique and extreme water conditions of the Arabian Gulf. He/she will tackle challenges related to high salinity (up to 47,000 ppm) and severe biological fouling, driving innovations in high-pressure Reverse Osmosis (RO) processes. The role involves characterizing local seawater and desalination brine to inform targeted membrane design, as well as advanced membrane fabrication techniques utilizing electrospinning, phase inversion, and additive manufacturing. The researcher will also develop robust pretreatment processes (MF, UF, NF) to protect systems against harsh regional challenges, including harmful algal blooms. Experimental and theoretical investigations of mass transport, compaction, and energy efficiency will be performed to optimize desalination processes for regional sustainability. The successful applicant will oversee projects, develop extensive technical expertise, and implement innovative solutions. He/she will contribute to the development of novel concepts and proposal writing, while efficiently addressing complex challenges. Responsibilities will include writing reports, authoring publications, drafting patents, and presenting results at conferences. The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated knowledge of membrane fabrication, characterization, and separation processes. Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and exceptional verbal and written communication abilities are essential. The candidate should be capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a team. Applicants must have a PhD, or equivalent advanced or terminal degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, in materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, or related field, with no more than 5 years post receipt of the PhD.
