Duke University

A private comprehensive teaching and research university, Duke traces its roots to 1838, and officially became Duke University in 1924. Description The Water Research Center (WRC) at NYU Abu Dhabi invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist to contribute to cutting-edge research on membrane fouling and functional membranes, including electrically conductive membranes. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Raed Hashaikeh in the Mechanical Engineering Department, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and graduate students. The Associate Research Scientist will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities at NYUAD. This position supports two interconnected research streams: Investigating membrane fouling mechanisms and mitigation strategies in desalination and water treatment processes. Developing and optimizing functional membranes, including electrically conductive membranes, for use in desalination, energy generation, and electrochemical separations. Responsibilities: Conduct research on membrane fouling (biofouling, scaling, organic fouling), diagnostics, and control strategies. Design, fabricate, and characterize functional membranes (e.g., conductive, anti-fouling, electrochemical systems). Operate and evaluate membrane systems (RO, NF, UF) at lab and pilot scales. Apply advanced characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, AFM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, EDX, EIS, CV). Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers in materials science, chemical and environmental engineering. Contribute to mentorship of students and lab group discussions. Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Strong background in membrane science with demonstrated expertise in either membrane fouling or electrochemical membrane technologies. Experience with membrane fabrication, testing, and characterization. Solid analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively. A strong publication record with first-author articles. Desired Qualifications: Expertise in fouling analysis and mitigation, including cleaning protocols and pretreatment strategies. Familiarity with conductive membranes, carbon-based materials, or mixed-matrix systems. Experience with electrochemical methods (e.g., EIS, CV) and surface functionalization. Knowledge of materials for charge transport and ion exchange. Prior collaboration with international or multidisciplinary research teams. This position will begin in March 2026, as a two-year contract, renewable depending on performance. The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing. Description We are seeking Post-Doctoral Associates who are passionate about Data Science, with an emphasis in Computational Social Science, with a starting date of September 1, 2026. Some of the possible research topics include: (i) social media analysis, (ii) collaboration and teamwork, (iii) gender inequality, (iv) diversity, (v) online controlled experiments, and (vi) network science. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and hard-working with a PhD in Data Science, Computational Social Science, Computer Science, or Information Science. The position requires experience with at least one of the following: Data Science, Machine Learning, Computational Social Science, Big Data. Relevant skills could include statistical analysis, data management and collection, causal inference, network analysis, graph theory, visualizations, and online tool development. Experience in conducting online controlled experiments is also desired, but not required. Excellent communication skills in English, ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, and scientific creativity are essential. Selected candidates will spend half their time on collaborative research with Bedoor AlShebli, an Assistant Professor in Computational Social Science in the Social Science Division at NYUAD, and half their time on independent research. The selected candidate will receive an appointment for three years. Your personal sphere of play: The Wanninger Lab is hiring a Postdoc in Invertebrate Evolution with a focus on either comparative morphology, EvoDevo, or phylogenomics. We are a dynamic, international group situated in the recently built University of Vienna Biology Building (UBB) with new labs to perform top-notch molecular, morphological, and -omics related research. Additional infrastructure includes animal care facilities to maintain and rear aquatic and terrestrial animals as well as access to sequencing facilities, high-end computer clusters, and an imaging and electron microscopy core facility. Research in our group covers diverse invertebrate lineages, with particular strengths in spiralian taxa. The successful candidate is expected to work on mollusks, a core target taxon of our lab for which a wide range of molecular resources and established lab protocols are available. Previous experience with these animals is not required, but candidates should have a strong interest in working with little-investigated, aquatic, non-model invertebrate animals. The position offers substantial intellectual freedom for developing an independent research profile within the lab’s broader focus. Projects may address questions in evolutionary developmental biology, morphological evolution, comparative genomics, or other related topics, depending on the candidate’s interests. The postdoc will work within an active research group and will have opportunities for collaboration with current team members on ongoing and emerging projects. The position is available immediately. While we aim for a start date at around May 1st, 2026, this is somewhat flexible and can be negotiated with the PI. The position is fully funded for six years. Your future tasks: The successful candidate will work in the group of the PI, Prof. Andreas Wanninger. Within the overall framework and research foci of the Wanninger lab, the PostDoc may work relatively independently. Projects will be developed jointly with the PI; significant input from the candidate is highly desired. The position offers opportunities to supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s students, lead small project teams, and contribute to curriculum development. The job includes active participation in research, teaching, and administration.
