About Derzhavin Tambov State University

Derzhavin Tambov State University is in the city of Tambov, 300 miles to the south-east of Moscow. It is one of the largest universities in Central Russia.

It can trace a history of just over 100 years back to the foundation of Tambov State University in 1918.

Two institutions which grew out of the first iteration of Derzhavin Tambov State University - Tambov State Institute of Culture and Tambov State Pedagogical Institute - were merged in 1994 to create the present institution.

In the following year it took the name of Gavrila Derzhavin, a poet, soldier and administrator who rose from the ranks in the late 18th Century to become Governor of Tambov and Minister of Justice.

There are nine faculties at the university including mathematics, physics and information technology; economics; management and service; medicine; law and national security; philology; humanities and sociocultural education; education and environmental technologies and sports. There are 58 departments within these faculties.

International student numbers have multiplied over the years with much of the growth in medicine and dentistry programmes designed specifically for foreign students. International students come from more than 64 countries.

Classes are offered in Russian, English and French.

There are a number of cultural and sports events that both domestic and foreign students can take part. The most colourful and significant event at the university is International Festival Day of National Cultures.

The university organises sightseeing tours to the historical and cultural centres of Russia.for students. The aim of these tours is to help foreign students to expand their knowledge about Russia and its cultural heritage. Tours to Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, the Golden Ring of Russia, Tarkhani, Ivanovka (Rachmaninoff’s estate in Tambov region), Volgograd, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Tula, Ryazan are of great popularity with foreign students
