ABOUT THE ROLE

Northumbria University in Newcastle is inviting applications for a Research Fellow position in ice-ocean interactions in Antarctica. This position starts in early 2026 and is fully funded for 2.5 years (30 months) and embedded into the "Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP7 (ISMIP7)" initiative that aims to provide sea level projections from ice sheets to the next IPCC report (for more information on ISMIP7, please see ismip.org). Candidates will undertake research in the field of climate change, with a focus on the future ocean-driven melting of the Antarctic ice sheet. The position is funded by the Heising-Simons Foundation that provides funding for ISMIP7 Core Activities.

We invite candidates with interests and experience in the fields of physical and computational oceanography, numerical glaciology, mathematics, physics, or related disciplines. Working as part of multi-disciplinary team, the successful candidate will support the research activities of the Antarctic ice-ocean focus group of ISMIP7. The aim of the group is to develop a protocol and provide the boundary conditions for ocean-driven melting needed by ice-sheet modelers to simulate the evolution of the Antarctic ice sheet, and to provide an understanding of the influence of choices made on the resulting projections. This project encompasses developing, conducting and summarising the Melt parameterisation Model Intercomparison Project (MeltMIP). MeltMIP, analogously to initMIP for model initialisation (Seroussi et al., 2019), tests the influence of melt parameterisation choices and parameter values on projections, through idealised experiments. Better understanding the ice-ocean interactions could help to reduce the large uncertainties around future Antarctic ice loss. The successful candidate is also encouraged to develop their own research across a broad range of topics, depending on specialty and interests.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The successful candidate will be part of the project “Projected sea level rise from ice sheets: the Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP7 (ISMIP7)”, funded by the Heising-Simons Foundation. They will work closely with the Antarctic ice-ocean focus group co-led by Ronja Reese (PI of the project at Northumbria) and Nicolas Jourdain from the Université Grenoble Alpes, France. The research will be conducted in collaboration with the entire focus group which meets on a monthly basis and the wider ISMIP7 project.

The successful candidate will also be encouraged to collaborate with researchers at Northumbria, specifically, members of the NERC-funded project “Rethining Antarctic Sea-level Projections”, the “Cold Environments” research group, the “Future of Ice on Earth” Peak of Excellence at Northumbria, the “Centre for Polar Observations and Modelling” at Northumbria, and further members of the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences.

ABOUT YOU

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant discipline (Climate Physics, Physical Geography, Physical Oceanography, Glaciology or similar) and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in ice-ocean interactions in Antarctica, numerical modelling of ice sheets or polar oceans, sub-shelf melt parameterisations, and/or analysis of large datasets.

The post will commence in the beginning of 2026, with 1st of January being the target start date -- flexibility is possible to support our interest in a diverse and inclusive research environment.

The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry funded research project where you will be part of the research team to develop advanced Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) scanning technologies.

Job Responsibilities


	Participate in research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. 
	Undertake these responsibilities in the project: 
	i. Conduct comprehensive literature review on NQR technology, including design approaches, scanning methods, signal processing techniques, and comparison with alternative detection technologies.
	ii. Support design and development of NQR prototype, including system architecture, component selection, and experimental setup.
	iii. Conduct lab and site tests to evaluate the performance of NQR prototype.
	iv. Generate design documents and test documents at every stage of development until the final prototype.
	Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers.
	Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations.
	 Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment.


Job Requirements


	Has a bachelor’s degree in Electronics; Specialization in RF/Microwave or Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is preferred.
	Has solid knowledge of electronics, including circuit design, PCB layout, and hardware troubleshooting.
	Has relevant competence in the areas of Radio Frequency design and measurement; Familiarity with high-power amplifier systems is a plus.
	Has relevant experience in the areas of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) design and implementation is a plus.
	Experience in electromagnetic simulation using CST Studio Suite and circuit simulation with PSpice, LTspice, or equivalent is an advantage.
	Experience with developing software for instrument control and data acquisition using LabVIEW is helpful.

Description

The Water Research Center at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a postdoctoral associate to work on the development of responsive membranes with in situ switchable properties, under the supervision of Professor Nidal Hilal, Director of the Water Research Center and Global Professor of Engineering and professor Raed Hashaikeh, Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

The successful applicant will lead an innovative project focused on the development of surface-patterned membranes with tailored surface features designed to enhance the performance of microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), membrane distillation (MD), and nanofiltration (NF) processes. The role involves advanced membrane fabrication techniques and a range of membrane characterization methods, such as SEM, EDS, TGA, contact angle measurement, CFP, BET, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, among others. Lab-scale testing will be performed to establish critical relationships between fabrication methods, structure, properties, and membrane performance, with the goal of improving desalination and water treatment applications.

The successful applicant will oversee projects, develop extensive technical expertise, and implement innovative solutions. He/she will contribute to the development of novel concepts and proposal writing, while efficiently addressing complex challenges. Responsibilities will include writing reports, authoring publications, drafting patents, and presenting results at conferences. The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated knowledge of membrane fabrication, surface patterning, membrane characterization, and separation processes. Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and exceptional verbal and written communication abilities are essential. The candidate should be capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Applicants must have a PhD in materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, or related field. Excellent experimental and analytical skills relevant to the project (in particular membrane fabrication and surface patterning as well as membrane characterization) are required. Candidates with a demonstrated history of peer-reviewed publications in a related area, along with prior expertise in materials science and analytical chemistry will be preferred.

This position will begin in March 2026, as a two-year contract, renewable depending on performance.
