Founded in 1833, the University of Zurich (UZH) was the first university in Europe to be established by a democratic government rather than a monarch or the church.
Now the largest university in Switzerland, it is home to 26,000 students and comprises seven faculties offering over 100 degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
UZH is a member of the League of European Research Universities, placing it among Europe’s most prestigious research institutions, with a particularly strong reputation in the fields of medicine, immunology, biology, genetics, neuroscience and economics.
Although its undergraduate degrees are mainly taught in Swiss Standard German, Masters’ courses are all taught in English.
The university maintains active links with the community and possesses an ethos that states all knowledge and research should be shared with the public. Consequently, the general public is granted access to its twelve museums and numerous libraries, and many of the university’s research findings are made accessible in the form of public lectures and panel discussions.
UZH also has close collaborations with other universities in Switzerland, including the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, and across Europe.
The institution has a long tradition of forward-thinking and progressive policies. It was an early pioneer for women’s rights in education, for example, and was the first university in the German-speaking world to award a doctorate to a female student.
It also boasts associations with 12 Nobel Laureates, including Albert Einstein and Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, who first detected X-rays.
Zurich is a major city for business and finance, as well as culture - home to myriad museums, art galleries, theatres and orchestras. In 2015, the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Ranking placed Zürich among the top ten most liveable cities in the world.
All three of the university’s campuses are located near the city centre and are easily accessible by public transport.

The role We are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated postdoctoral Research Fellow in quantitative genetics to join a multidisciplinary research team. The post involves working with a team based at the University of Surrey, King’s College London and the University of Oxford. The post is based at the University of Surrey with Professor Angelica Ronald. The project aims to advance understanding of the brain basis and common genetic architecture underlying infant and childhood neurodevelopment, with a particular focus on the development of autism spectrum conditions. Objectives will be achieved by applying advanced multivariate analytic methods to large-scale datasets emerging from genome-wide association studies of developmental traits. Existing datasets, including genetic, neuroimaging and clinical data, will be combined to generate novel insights into biological and developmental processes contributing to autism and related traits. You will be responsible for conducting a range of advanced quantitative analysis on secondary datasets incorporating genetic, neuroimaging and clinical data on child development. You will have responsibility for supporting integration across the study team including: overseeing data transfer agreements between institutions; version-controlling and archiving code and leading data cleaning, harmonisation and analysis. Throughout the project you will work with an interdisciplinary team of lead investigators and external collaborators. You will have access to advanced methodological training courses and other professional development training opportunities. You will lead on high-impact publications, conference presentations and dissemination of results. About you You should have a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline such as quantitative genetics, behavioural genetics, human genetics, developmental psychology, neuroscience and individual differences psychology (although individuals who have almost completed a doctoral degree may be appointed). You will also have an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline with a 2:1 or first-class grade (or international equivalent). You will already have some experience in conducting quantitative data analytic studies and preparing data for analysis and be proficient in using R, Python or similar programming language. You should have the ability to write clearly and concisely with a good publication record commensurate with the level of your career, and the ability to work independently with excellent organisation and communication skills. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to lead the storm surge modelling in the Singapore Sea. As a specialist in wave modelling software, the successful candidate will work on cutting-edge projects related to coastal and ocean wave modelling using Delt3D software. The role of the researcher is to perform physics-based modeling to build a numerical model that can predict storm surges in Singapore coastlines based on different weather conditions. The researcher will also work with team members within the consortium in generating necessary data required for developing a machine learning model for storm surge prediction. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Delft3D and SWAN Modelling: Utilize Delft3D and SWAN software to develop and validate numerical models for wave propagation, storm surge modelling, and coastal dynamics. Building up of a database of sea level anomaly with extreme weather conditions: Utilize the developed numerical model to build a database of sea level anomaly with different weather conditions, which can be used to develop a data-driven model for storm surge prediction. Data Analysis: Process and analyze climate, ocean wave and coastal data to improve model accuracy. Research: Conduct research to enhance wave modelling techniques and contribute to the advancement of coastal engineering and oceanography. Impact Assessment: Evaluating the potential impacts of storm surges on coastal regions, including flood risk assessments and vulnerability analyses. Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including hydrodynamic researchers, coastal engineers, and oceanographers. Reporting: Prepare research findings for publication in scientific journals and present results at conferences. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Assists in co-supervision of Final Year Projects (FYP) or capstone projects students together with the project PI. The employee is to communicate with any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any adhoc duties assigned. Requirements PhD or Master degree in a related field with a focus on coastal engineering, oceanography, or hydrodynamics. Proficiency in wave modeling software, particularly Delft3D and SWAN.
