About the University of Indonesia

Basic information and contact details for the University of Indonesia

institution

Established in 1849, the University of Indonesia is the oldest state-run university in Indonesia with campuses in Depok, West Java and Jakarta. The main campus in Depok now houses the majority of the faculties, including mathematics and natural sciences, humanities, economics and many more. University of Indonesia has graduated many of the Nation’s top academics, technocrats, and intellectuals. Research and works produced by the academic society of University of Indonesia have also provided numerous solutions for Indonesia and the world.

In 2007, the university underwent substantial reform and the university now boasts one of the largest libraries in Southeast Asia, accommodating over 20,000 visitors per day and holding approximately 1.5 million books. The library, which was designed with sustainability in mind, powers itself with solar energy.

The university’s main campus in Depok was built during the mid-1980s when the university modernised. Just 25 per cent of the 320 hectares is used for academic, research and student activities, while 75 per cent is used to maintain the surrounding forest.

The urban forest covers an area of 90 hectaresconsisting of many valuable tree species. There also six large lakes whose acronyms for each name to form the word KAMPUS, namely K(enanga), A(ghatis), M(ahoni), P(uspa), U(lin), S(alam).

In pandemic situation, University of Indonesia had to change from face-to-face teaching to online learning and breakthroughs with the application of the Kampus Merdeka (Independent campus) concept. This is an essential manifestation of student centered learning. Kampus Merdeka provides challenges and opportunities for the development of innovation, creativity, capacity, personality, and student needs.

During 2022, University of Indonesia synergized very well with various industries through efforts to support breakthrough innovations, inventions, and ideas for the needs of industry and society. In 2022, University of Indonesia successfully obtained 267 patents.

These achievements are further reinforced by the success of University of Indonesia to rank as one of the best universities in the world according to the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Impact Ranking.

Description The Advanced Materials and Building Efficiency Research Laboratory (AMBER Lab) at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a postdoctoral associate to work on the development, characterization, and applications of sustainable construction materials derived from desalination waste. This exciting research will combine innovations in brine-to-cement technologies with advances in low-carbon binders such as reactive magnesium oxide cement (RMC) and belite-calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) systems. The successful applicant will contribute to four main research thrusts that are central to the success of this multidisciplinary project: (i) designing and developing chemical and ion-exchange processes for energy- and cost-efficient recovery of minerals and chemicals from desalination reject brine., (ii) utilizing recovered minerals such as brucite (Mg(OH)₂) and CaCO₃ to produce innovative building materials, including RMC- and BCSA-based composites, (iii) studying carbonation and hydration mechanisms in these sustainable binders at the nanoscale using advanced in-situ characterization techniques, and (iv) quantifying the environmental footprint of recovered materials through life-cycle assessment (LCA) and evaluating their economic feasibility through life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA). This position offers a unique opportunity to pioneer novel sustainable binders that directly address the dual challenges of brine management and CO₂ emissions reduction. The candidate will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of PhD-level scientists, graduate, and undergraduate students working at the intersection of water treatment, materials science, and civil engineering.
