Fingernails were chewed to the quick at Universities UK's winter reception. Organisers were delighted with the attendance at its annual event: the Houses of Parliament's terrace marquee venue was dangerously full. But the organisers were overheard murmuring about the difficulty of predicting how many people would turn up and praying that the fire brigade wouldn't drop in to check numbers.
