Founded in 1991, the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic, is the result of the unification of the College of Mechanical and Electric Engineering and the Faculty of Education in Pilsen - both set up at the end of the 1940s.

Alongside education and engineering, the university teaches a broad range of subjects including applied sciences, design and art, economics, philosophy and arts, law and public administration, languages, health care and technology. Recently, the institution increased its research in education, economics, law, philosophy and arts.

Students who do technical courses can apply for the Annual Emild Skoda Award for their Diploma or PhD, as part of a collaboration between the University of West Bohemia and Skoda Holding. Since 1996, the higher level institution has also run the Science and Technology Park in cooperation with the Business Innovation Centre Pizen Company.

International students can join courses in English or Czech.

Pilsen is a scenic city famous for its Pilsner Urquell Brewery which has been in place since 1842. You can visit the brewing cellars as well as the city’s other attractions such as the nineteenth century Great Synagogue - which regularly hosts concerts - and the sixteenth century St Bartholomew Cathedral.

Together with the city of Pilsen, the university also organises the Pilsen Days of Science and Engineering on an annual basis. Among the university’s notable alumni are politicians Karla Slechtova and Jiri Pospisil,  poet, writer, and actor Milan Chovanec, and academic Milan Kohout.

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. This project focuses on federated causal inference in heterogeneous data environments, addressing the challenge of enabling trustworthy causal analysis across distributed datasets while preserving privacy. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end investigation of novel federated learning strategies for causal inference. The role will bridge rigorous theoretical work with hands-on algorithm design and development on real-world datasets. The core responsibility is to build and validate federated causal inference algorithms through simulations and live demonstrations. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI) to ensure all project deliverables are met. Derivation of novel performance metrics for federated causal inference algorithms. Analysis of causal inference models in federated settings using synthetic and real-world datasets. Design and development of novel federated causal inference algorithms and associated software APIs. Validation of algorithms via simulations and live demonstrations. Job Requirements A Master's degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or equivalent. Strong theoretical background in statistics and machine learning. Knowledge of the basics of federated learning and causal inference is highly encouraged. Proven track record in research and development of machine learning algorithms. Proficiency in algorithm development using Python and ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow. Key Competencies Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Able to build and maintain strong working relationships with people within and external to the university. Self-directed learner who believes in continuous learning and development. Proficient in technical writing and presentation. Possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

The programme and material for the teaching and assessment are delivered by the Academic Director. PGCHE is accredited by Advance HE, and those who complete the course will be awarded Associate Fellow or Fellow status of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Additionally, the Academic Director will be responsible for developing bespoke teacher training workshops and programmes for local educators initially and then expand the programme nationally and internationally, establishing UNNC as a leader in global teacher training and professional development. The new Academic Director will also seek grants and lead research projects in the area of local and global teacher training and professional development, contribute to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science (FHSS) Area Studies research initiatives, and collaborate on research and knowledge exchange with UNNC’s UNESCO Office, housed in EDEN, and the University of Nottingham, UK’s, UNESCO Chair, housed in the School of Education.
