About National Ilan University

National Ilan University’s history dates back to 1926 when Taiwan Provincial Ilan School of Agriculture and Forestry was established. The school was promoted from a five-year junior college to a polytechnic college and was renamed National Ilan Institute of Technology. In 2003 the institute was granted university status and became National Ilan University. The university is located in the centre of Yilan City, Yilan County, northeastern Taiwan. It is the only national university in Yilan Country. The city is situated on the north side of the Lanyang River. It is known as the cultural, economic and political centre of the region. There are four colleges at the university, namely the College of Bioresources, College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College of Engineering, and College of Humanities and Management. The university also boasts 15 departments and 17 graduate institutes. Most courses are taught in Chinese, however there is a selection of masters programmes that are taught in English. The university is fully equipped with over 150 laboratories available for students to carry out research and enrich their studies. There is also an Analysis and Technology Consulting Centre, which is used by local industries to manufacture and produce their goods. In 2006 the university opened an Incubator Centre, which has research development facilities available for local industries. The university has partnerships with over 100 universities and research institutions worldwide. These partnerships facilitate academic exchange programmes for students as well as overseas volunteer activities and summer camps. Every year the university welcomes increasing numbers of international students from across the globe.

In research, SIT faculty aims to bridge knowledge creation and utilisation. Our faculty collaborates closely with industry on translational research and innovation with focus on addressing pertinent industry challenges to impact businesses. The Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) Scheme is co-funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and SIT to encourage and support outstanding young Singaporeans interested in pursuing an academic career at SIT. The Applied Research Fellowship aims to provide doctoral candidates who are about to complete or have recently completed their studies an opportunity to engage in advanced training and/or research at an overseas university for one year. Besides financial support, awardees will also receive academic mentorship. Upon completion of the Fellowship, awardees will be considered for Assistant Professorship. Eligibility and Selection Criteria Singapore citizen Doctoral candidates who have recently completed or are about to complete their studies in a discipline under the supported areas for START below Excellent academic record plus a high degree of proficiency and motivation for selected research area Have been accepted or have applied for a postdoctoral training at a leading overseas university in a research area that is aligned with SIT’s supported areas A keen interest in an academic career Value of Fellowship The Fellowship provides: Monthly stipend Overseas maintenance allowance Return economy airfare Conference and fieldwork grants Overseas medical insurance Fellows will also each be assigned a SIT faculty mentor throughout their post-doctoral training and have opportunities to participate in faculty development programmes. The fellowship is tenable for one year. On an exception basis, a two-year programme may be supported. Service Commitment One year for every year of sponsorship. Application Process Applications are open throughout the year via the various links below. Applications received before 15 January 2026 will be considered for the 2026 intake. Interview by the respective clusters for shortlisted applicants will be conducted throughout the year. Final Interview by the Panel for shortlisted applicants for the 2026 intake will commence in Mid-March to End April 2026. Awards will be finalised by July 2026. Supported Areas for START - Health Sciences Diagnostic Radiography: Radiography involves the controlled use of ionising radiation, radioactive substances and non-ionising radiation to produce diagnostic quality images of the human body, facilitating the diagnosis and treatment of patients (Allied Health Professions Act 2011). Dietetics: Dietetics involves the management of medical conditions and promotion of health through application of food and nutrition. Dietitians provide medical nutrition therapy and implement specific diet strategies for chronic medical conditions, illnesses, or injuries (Singapore Nutrition and Dietetics Association). Nursing: Registered nurses render health services to individuals, families, and communities (Singapore Nursing Board Code for Nurses and Midwives 2018). Speech and Language Therapy: Speech and Language Therapy involves assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of communication and swallowing disorders (Allied Health Professions Act 2011). Occupational Therapy: Occupational therapy involves assessment and interventions to work or school, self-care, leisure or play, physical environments as well as cognitive, mental and physical components of function to enable individuals affected by physical injury or illness, developmental or learning disabilities, psychosocial dysfunctions or the aging process, to engage in everyday life occupations in order to maximise independent performance of life roles, prevent disability and maintain health (Allied Health Professions Act 2011). Physiotherapy: Physiotherapy involves assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of pain, injury, or any other physical dysfunction, through the use of education, exercise, manual therapy, electro-physical agents, technology or any other treatment for those purposes (Allied Health Professions Act 2011).

About the opportunity We are seeking a proactive and student-focused Student Life Officer to join our Education Operations and Projects team within the Faculty of Medicine and Health.
