About Hiroshima University

Although some of its constituent institutions date back to earlier times, Hiroshima University opened in its present form in 1949. This took place as part of a major reorganisation of Japanese education after the Second World War which saw the establishment of a single national university in almost all of the country’s 47 prefectures (or administrative divisions).

Notable pre-existing institutions include the Hiroshima Higher Normal School, set up in 1902, one of two national training centres for mid-school teachers; a university focussing on literature and science (1929); and a technical college (1920) which forged strong links with Japanese industry.  Along with three other teacher training colleges which also became part of Hiroshima University, these institutions were severely damaged by the atom bomb dropped on the city in August 1945. It was precisely because the university was able to rise from the ashes of destruction that it adopted the phoenix as its symbol.

Hiroshima soon expanded its remit, adding both a medical school and postgraduate provision in 1953. This was followed in 1963 by what is now the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine, designed to study the impact of nuclear radiation and to develop practical measures for improving the lives of the tens of thousands of survivors of the bomb blast. Other research centres are devoted to fields ranging from early childhood education and peace science to regional geography and marine biology.

Like many other universities across the world, Hiroshima experienced student unrest in the 1960s. This led to a number of reforms. One of the most significant was bringing together virtually all the faculties on a single campus at Higashi-Hiroshima City. It is now widely recognized as one of the nation’s most prestigious and broadly based universities.

We are looking for a person with a good Honours Degree in Geography, Geology, Anthropology, Archaeology, Forensic Science, Environmental Science or a similar subject, to work as a part-time Research Assistant with Professor Hunt in a laboratory-based project on the geoarchaeology of the Neanderthal “Flower Burials” at Shanidar Cave, Iraq. The contract is for six months. The work will involve the analysis of sediments, recording of laboratory results, data entry and contribution to the drafting of reports and research papers. Full training will be given in the sediment analysis techniques necessary for the work. You should be an enthusiastic and highly organised individual who will be expected to participate in all aspects of the programme of work, including: the day-to-day running of the research project; sediment granulometry and geochemistry, data recording, entry and interpretation; communicating with Professor Hunt and the wider Shanidar Project team, and assisting with the production of internal reports and manuscripts for publication. Working in alignment with the University's research strategy, the appointee will undertake innovative, high-impact research in bionanotechnology and regenerative medicine. This nationally recognised program aims to advance fundamental understanding and translational applications within the discipline. Funded by the Australian Research Council Discovery Project, "Understanding Transient Cellular Response to Electrical Stimulation (DP250101190)," the role will focus on developing cutting-edge methodologies to investigate live cell responses to electrical stimulation with high spatial and temporal resolution. The Research Fellow will design and implement advanced bioinformatics pipelines to interrogate stem cell biology using multi-omics approaches, including RNA sequencing, proteomics, and secretomics datasets. Responsibilities include integrative analysis of complex molecular data, interpretation of cellular response mechanisms, and close collaboration with experimental researchers to uncover pathways regulating stem cell function and fate. The successful candidate will be supported to build an independent research profile through structured mentorship in competitive grant writing and opportunities to contribute to, and lead, fellowship and project applications. They will play a key role in planning and delivering high-quality research projects, establishing productive research networks within RMIT and with local and national partners, and producing impactful research outputs that strengthen the School's research excellence and reputation. We are looking for candidates with their knowledge and experience in the key focus areas: Essential Expertise in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, ideally working with human mesenchymal stromal/stem cells, and/or induced pluripotent stem cells. Expertise in bioinformatics, including RNA-sequencing, proteomics, secretomics, and pipeline development. Evidence of research outputs including publications, conference contributions and/or technical reports in the field. Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to confidently and effectively work with colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and effectively manage varying workloads and respond to changing priorities as required. Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication skills.
