Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla is a private, non-profit university located in central Mexico.

The university was set up in 1973 by a community of Catholic students with help from the Archbishop and a former political group known as the Anti-Communist University Front.

Today, the university has more than 40 undergraduate programmes and more than 30 master’s courses, as well as 12 PhD programmes and research opportunities.

The university campus is in an urban setting spread across the city of Puebla, an attractive historic city known for its culinary history and colonial architecture. Puebla is also known for its strong student community and social scene – Puebla is home to at least 20 other universities and colleges.

Facilities at the university are good – there are more than 100 laboratories and classrooms on its main campus. A second campus in located in Tehuacán, roughly 120km south of Puebla.

Like many Mexican universities, Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla is linked to a number of high schools in the state.

Subjects taught at the institution include economics, design, health sciences, humanities and engineering, with a number of courses available remotely for online or distance learning.

There are five main research centres based at the university, including one centre dedicated to the research of native plants, and one centre of science and religion studies.

The university encourages international applicants and takes pride in its international outlook, with student exchange programmes available with partnering universities in 36 countries.

Sports are an important aspect of campus life, and the university has seven representative sports teams in the national university leagues: basketball, soccer, indoor soccer, tennis, swimming, track and field and Taekwondo.
