The University of Crete is one of Greece’s most illustrious higher education institutions. 

This modern university has campuses in two cities on the island of Crete: Rethymnon, where the faculties of education, philosophy and social, political and economic science are located, and Heraklion, which has the faculties of science and engineering and medicine.

The university has a strong record of producing internationally significant research and has founded three of Crete’s prominent research institutions: the Natural History Museum, Skinakas Observatory, and the University General Hospital.

Although all of the university’s undergraduate courses are taught in Greek, the university's mission includes international cooperation and integration. It has staff and student exchanges with over 200 universities, and was selected as an Erasmus success story for its efforts to welcome international students to Crete.

Crete itself is one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations. Its white sand beaches draw in sunbathers and swimmers, while its rich history makes it a must-see for fans of culture and architecture. Crete shares much of its heritage with Greece, but also has its own ancient culture inherited from the Minoans– the earliest known European civilisation, of which Crete was the homeland. The legendary Minoan ruins of Knossos can still be seen today.

Both Heraklion and Rethymnon are filled with examples of Venetian architecture dating from Crete’s invasion by Venice in the 13th century. Heraklion, as the island’s capital, has many of its best museums, as well as the stadiums for its sports teams, while Rethymnon is famous for its unspoilt old town.

In the School of Veterinary Medicine, you will have the opportunity to work with a collaborative team of researchers conducting cutting-edge research in infectious and non-communicable diseases and experts from world class veterinary institutes as well as an established network of veterinary practices through our many collaborative partnerships. The School of Veterinary Medicine currently holds over £7m in external research support for animal and human microbiome projects. A vibrant and collaborative community of post-doctoral researchers and PhD students are currently working on microbiome projects ranging from in vitro studies of antimicrobial resistance to helminth and parasiticide interactions with the microbiome to early-life microbiome of foals. In-house technologies supported by the University include both Illumina and nanopore sequencing platforms, Luminex-read multiplex immunoassay of cytokines, Biolog metabolic fingerprinting and aerobic/anaerobic culturomics. Data processing and analysis is supported by the University’s Bioinformatics Core Facility. Examples of current projects are available at Horse Microbiome Research Group and Anthelmintic Resistance in Southeast Asia (AHR-SEA) and La Ragione Research Group. We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Microbiome Science to further grow and sustain research in this field at the University of Surrey. About the role Within the School of Veterinary Medicine, you will join the Section of Infection and Immunity within the Discipline of Comparative Biomedical Sciences. Job Description DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION STUDIES Research Assistant / Senior Research Assistant (Full Time) (25260747) We are looking for a research assistant or senior research assistant who has knowledge and experience in conducting research in the fields of technology-based health communication and media psychology to join research projects on mental health promotion. Responsibilities: The appointee will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) to support both research and administrative functions of the projects. Support all matters related to the main research project on narrative-based mental health promotion and other related projects on mHealth and health psychology. Specific tasks include participant recruitment, project management, survey design, conducting lab and online experimental studies, data maintenance and analysis, writing reports and summaries; Conduct literature reviews and contribute to the development of research protocols, grant proposals, and research ethics applications; Coordinate with collaborating organisations, including tech companies, clinics, and NGOs; Keep track of budget and expenditures; and Assist with the planning, implementation, and dissemination of research studies.
