The Global Mobility Office is a student-facing and external-facing professional services team of eleven. This is an opportunity to join a small, close, centralised professional services team providing inbound and outbound study and work abroad lifecycle support and reporting, mobility partnership agreement negotiation and management, and administration of Erasmus, Turing and the Staff International Exchange Programme, in pursuance of the university’s Education and International strategies.

We are part of the Students & Education Directorate, a collection of wide-ranging professional services in place to support King’s students and their education. As a directorate we manage the student lifecycle from application to graduation and beyond, to ensure a coherent and seamless student experience and effective administrative processes, working closely with King’s faculties to do so. 

About The Role

The Global Mobility Officer (Increasing Opportunities) works with the Global Mobility Officer (Outgoing Student Support) and Global Mobility Senior Officer (Outgoing Students Co-ordinator) to facilitate King’s students spending a period abroad as part of their degree or as an extra-curricular opportunity. The role combines programme administration, student support and international relationship liaison. 

The Global Mobility Officer (Increasing Opportunities) has operational responsibility for a set of tasks and processes within the Global Mobility Office’s wider remit. They work within and across multiple teams at the university, engaging with a wide range of colleagues, and they contribute to activities which positively impact the student experience. This includes assisting with the planning, administration and delivery of outgoing study and work abroad opportunities; responding sensitively to student enquiries ensuring students experience consistent support pre-, during, and post-mobility; nominating and then supporting outgoing King’s students with their applications to partner universities and work placements, particularly those in Europe; troubleshooting and liaising as necessary with external organisations; and providing support for and contributing to widening outgoing mobility participation and funding administration as well as broader diversity and inclusion activities for under-represented cohorts.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

	Relevant work experience and/or education: We think a wide range of different work and educational experiences could support you to be successful in this role. Relevant work experience might include work in other universities or any other large, complicated organisation, or else in roles with a diplomatic sensibility. Relevant educational experiences might include higher education in a related discipline, professional qualifications or other training.

Senior Researcher to lead the iCANDOC Precision Cancer Medicine doctoral pilot 

iCANDOC Precision Cancer Medicine doctoral education pilot invites applications for a part-time (50%) senior researcher position to operate in the directoral / managerial duties in the pilot.

The iCANDOC pilot aims to train 122 doctoral researchers at the University of Helsinki (UH) in Precision Cancer Medicine during 2024-2027 with a total budget of 31 M€. We are currently seeking an applicant to operate in directorial/managerial duties for the iCANDOC Precision Cancer Medicine doctoral education pilot.

The applicant ensures this exceptional pilot project reaches its goals. The applicant works as a member of the iCANDOC community of doctoral researchers, supervisors, and post-doctoral researchers and collaborates closely with the participating faculties/units, doctoral programs and the UH Doctoral School.

Task description

The iCANDOC applicant is responsible for execution of the iCANDOC doctoral pilot at UH during 2024-2027 according to UH guidelines, UH Doctoral Pilot Board decisions, and iCANDOC UH Steering Board decisions and in collaboration with the UH Doctoral School, doctoral programs, and participating faculties/units. To this end the applicant acts as the presenter of matters for the iCANDOC UH Steering Board, which decides on iCANDOC-UH principles including use of funding among several units; alignment of practices at different faculties and doctoral programs and nomination of iCANDOC staff and working group. The appilicant also interacts actively with the iCANDOC and iCAN flagship community to facilitate organization of courses, seminars, and meetings in Precision Cancer Medicine as well as secondment opportunities among potential future employees. The applicant together with the iCANDOC staff identifies and attempts to resolve any barriers to the execution of iCANDOC. The University of Helsinki is the coordinating university for the national iCANDOC pilot and therefore the applicant is also in charge of organizing meetings of the National iCANDOC Steering Group with representatives from all 14 participating organizations. The applicant supervises the iCANDOC staff including a coordinator, a scientific coordinator and supported by the iCANDOC post-doctoral program participants. At the beginning tasks also involve helping in the selection processes of doctoral researchers and their onboarding.

The director is appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine based on agreement on the appointment in the iCANDOC Steering Board.

About you

Prerequisites for the position are a doctoral degree, evidence of scholarly research work, the teaching skills necessary for the position and the ability to manage a research group and obtain supplementary research funding. The optimal candidate is an active scientist in the iCANDOC area, and has demonstrated skills in executing large and complex projects. Good communication and collaboration skills and a detail-oriented and analytical approach to problem-solving are appreciated. Strong written and oral English skills are required, and Finnish skills are considered an advantage.

The part-time appointment (minimally 50%, negotiable) enables carrying out independent research in the iCANDOC area. The appointment will be on a fixed-term basis until the end of 2027. The salary will be based on level OPT 6-7 of the demands level chart for research and teaching personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. A six-month trial period will be applied.

The goal is to develop and test a new, flexible program for 3-4 year doctorates by enhancing supervision practices and initiating doctoral studies already during an MD/Master’s program. University of Helsinki

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated postgraduate or postdoctoral Research Assistant in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Sleep, to work within the Surrey Sleep Research Centre at the University of Surrey.

This full-time post is available on a fixed term basis for 12 months. The Research Assistant will work under the supervision of Dr Ullrich Bartsch and in collaboration with the Prof Paul Gringras at the Evelina Children’s Hospital and King’s College London.

The role

You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers with the main aim to develop the next generation of AI models to predict severe sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy, from signals collected using wearable devices including electroencephalography (EEG).

This will require expertise in time series analysis and feature engineering using multimodal timeseries, with a focus on EEG signals. Additionally experience in using different deep learning architecture for time series classification would be beneficial.

A second goal of the project is to develop the concept of a frontend for the dissemination of model generated predictions to clinical teams. Experience in frontend development and inclusion of user feedback into deep learning architectures using reinforcement learning or a or related technologies would be advantageous

You will be part of a vibrant research environment within the Surrey Sleep Research Centre at the University of Surrey – and included in the University-wide Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence (PAI). Your work will involve leading, devising, coordinating, and supervising research projects, including the work involved in the collaborations with project partners, guidance to researchers and students, and applying for further funding to extend the research.

About you

You should hold a relevant postgraduate degree (Master’s) and/or hold a PhD/DPhil or be near completion of a PhD/DPhil - with experience in the field of computer science, maths, biomedical engineering, or other fields relevant to the proposed area of research. Proven programming experience in Python, MATLAB or C/C++ is essential. Expertise in the analysis of time series data such as the Electroencephalogram (EEG) and/or analysis of data recorded by wearable devices would be highly advantageous.

The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry invites applications for the position of

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCER / DOCTORAL RESEARCHER

for a fixed term position starting on 1 January 2025, or as agreed. The position is suited either for a Doctoral researcher, or for a Postdoctoral researcher. A Doctoral researcher is expected to work full time on the PhD thesis and to complete their thesis in three years.

The employment will extend over a period of 2-3 years, depending on the starting date of the contract and the type of the position (shorter for a Postdoctoral researcher, longer for a Doctoral researcher).

The position is located at the Department of Forest Sciences in the research group Forest Bioeconomy, Business, and Sustainability (FBBS). The position connects with the following projects:


	Reduced emissions through wood use: Mitigation pathways towards carbon neutrality (REDEEM, funded by the Research Council of Finland)
	Navigating European Forests and Forest Bioeconomy Sustainably to EU Climate Neutrality (ForestNavigator, coordinated by IIASA, funded by European Commission H2020)


REDEEM investigates the scale and timing of net greenhouse gas emissions in the event of an expanding bioeconomy and aims at realistic estimates of the forest sector’s contribution to the Paris Agreement by considering market dynamics and alternative carbon neutrality pathways. The project combines several methodological approaches and involves life cycle assessment (LCA), econometric analysis, simulation modelling, and future-oriented market research.

ForestNavigator assesses the climate change mitigation potential of European forests and forest-based sector through modelling of policy pathways, informing the public authorities on the most suitable approaches to forest policy and bioeconomy. The project relies on an integrated policy modelling framework for the EU forests and forest bioeconomy covering all relevant climate impacts and feedbacks, mitigation strategies, and forest ecosystem services. The University of Helsinki takes responsibility in assessing the future outlook of the European forest product markets and the climate change mitigation potential associated with industrial wood uses.

We are looking for a new team member to strengthen quantitative data analysis within the two projects, focused on consequential life cycle assessment (C-LCA) to estimate the avoided fossil emissions attributed to changes in wood uses and, more generally, climate change mitigation pathways in selected sectors.

Duties

Depending on the orientation and interests of the candidate, the duties may include:


	Contributing to building a system dynamics model for the textiles sector for examining the climate change mitigation potential of industry strategies and policy interventions.
	Modelling indirect market effects of chosen substitution cases, for example, with an open-source general equilibrium model (GTAP).
	Determining carbon parity periods for selected substitution cases, and comparisons to carbon budgets.
	Consequential LCA cases with an emphasis on market dynamics.


The duties may also include teaching and student supervision. Teaching tasks can account for up to 5 % of the annual working time.

Qualifications:


	PhD (for Postdoc) / MSc (for Doctoral researcher) in a relevant discipline (applied economics, engineering, sustainability science, industrial ecology, etc.)
	Strong background in one or more of the following: consequential LCA, simulation modelling (agent-based, system dynamics, or equilibrium modelling), programming (R or Python), econometrics and statistics
	Proficiency in spoken and written English (at least level C1)
	Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
	Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to prioritise and organise her/his daily task, and the ability to work both independently and as a part of a research group


The appointee is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki.
