Education secretary Charles Clarke will be alarmed to see a table in the Scottish Economic Policy Network's recent report on funding research in Scotland's universities highlighting the cash going to "Professions Allied to Medici". Is this the ultimate in interdisciplinarity, including popes, pawnbrokers, sculptors, assassins, artists and political theorists?
