University of Pécs: Academic Excellence and a Place in Your Heart

The University of Pécs won this year's European Association for International Educators (EAIE) Award for Excellence in Internationalisation for its online short-term virtual mobility programmes. Founded in 1367, the University of Pécs is the oldest higher education institution in Hungary, offering high-quality study programmes in a liveable, student-friendly city. The historic city has thousands of years of history, a mild, Mediterranean climate, and a welcoming and diverse international community where students can excel socially and academically.

Academic excellence, tradition and innovation

The University of Pécs combines academic excellence, tradition and innovation. It has become one of the largest higher education institutions in Hungary, offering a wide range of academic and research fields. Listed as an “Excellent University”, the University of Pécs feature=s 500 different study programmes, including short-term and degree programmes in all academic disciplines such as medicine, life sciences, natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, fine art, applied arts and music.

Committed to establishing an environment where all forms of divergent thinking and creativity may thrive, the priority of the University of Pécs is to strengthen innovation and research across all academic disciplines and fields. By educating and training outstanding professionals, scholars and artists, as well as by building an accepting community, we hope to achieve this goal collaboratively.

Several research projects meeting international standards are currently being implemented in the ten faculties of the University of Pécs and it’s Clinical Centre – the region’s main health-care facility. Scientific research at the university is extensive, multi-layered, and diverse. Medical and biological research (neuroscience, endocrinology-immunology, cardiovascular and infectious diseases, clinical trials), natural sciences research (physics, chemistry), and engineering and informatics research (energetics) take place at the Szentágothai Research Centre. This centre focuses on the infrastructure and research potential of the Southern Transdanubian Region, and it works with academic and industrial partners. With its state-of-the-art equipment, expansive knowledge base and network of experts, the facility hopes to become a leading research centre in Central Europe.

International

The University of Pécs values its 20,000 students, and it is proud to welcome more than 4,500 international students from more than 110 countries. Internationalization is a strategic and development priority of the University of Pécs because diversity, interculturalism and interdisciplinary exchange are key aspects elements of a quality education. This is why more than 70 full degree programmes and several short training programmes in English and other foreign languages are offered at the university. With different development projects, the university provides students with study programmes that enables them to live up to their full potential with diplomas recognized internationally.

The University of Pécs is honoured to have received the Excellence in Internationalization Award of the European Association for International Educators (EAIE) for organizing international virtual programmes starting in early 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Students from more than 70 global partner universities in 40 countries have participated in these programmes, including various online summer and winter courses, workshops, trainings, collaborative online courses, and a virtual internship programme. In addition to the academic programmes, exciting social events helped to create community with memorable experiences for students.

Inclusive Student City

Hungary is a medium-sized member state of the European Union. Pécs, located in the southwestern region of Hungary, is a culturally diverse city with a population of around 150,000. The history of Pécs dates back over 2,000 years. It has developed into a pleasant modern city, rich in historical monuments and culture with a lot to offer to anyone living or studying here. The town is famous for its museums, galleries, festivals and cultural events, as well as for its active student life at the University of Pécs. The beautiful “City of Culture” is located in a famous wine region, surrounded by idyllic villages and historic castles.

Students receive all the help they need from the university to make the most out of their education and time in Pécs. If students would like to start their research career, they can excel in several centres for advanced studies, and they are encouraged to continue their studies in one of the university’s 22 doctoral schools after graduation. Various services are available for all students on campus, and other support services are available for students with disabilities. Numerous student organizations offer mentorship and guidance assistance, as well exciting cultural, sports, dance and social programmes. Pécs is a place for students to meet life-long friends, and it is a city that easily finds its way into students’ hearts.
