THE’s Interdisciplinary Science Rankings Masterclass

Overcoming barriers to interdisciplinary scientific research with a data-led approach.

Responding to the view that the world’s pressing problems can be solved only with insights from a range of scholarly fields, Times Higher Education has partnered with Schmidt Science Fellows with the aim of developing new measures exploring universities’ contribution to interdisciplinary science. These measures will seek to improve scientific excellence and collaboration among universities, and to provide institutions with benchmarking data – rewarding campuses that incentivise cross-disciplinary work.

Learn all via our Masterclass, chaired by THE’s chief data officer, Duncan Ross, as he went through the following:

  • Why Schmidt Science Fellows and THE have partnered together for this project
  • The links between inputs, process and outputs in evaluating interdisciplinary science
  • The methodology for the ranking
  • The global and regional trends evident in the research undertaken so far
  • How institutions are submitting their data and how others can take part

Interdisciplinary Science Rankings Product Development Report

Overall, with nearly 1200 institutions participating, there is an evident desire of institutions to understand how their activity and output on interdisciplinary research can be measured.

This report reflects on the activities up to date to create systems of data collection and analysis that could effectively capture institutions’ progress in ISR, benchmarked worldwide. The report explains the findings of the initial feasibility study, the creation of the metric pillars and metrics, the data collection process, and an analysis of the initial findings of that process at both country and institutional level.
