Will Glasgow University's management group have to sit at a round table in future? The university scooped no fewer than three knighthoods in the New Year honours list, with "Sir" now to be added to the titles of professors James Armour, Michael Bond and Laurence Hunter.

But the traditional Glaswegian reluctance to be impressed by such baubles apparently lives on, with the news being greeted by the dry comment: "Aye, the knights are fairly drawing in."
