Four new members have been appointed to the board of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. They are: Jenny Fitton, principal of Taunton's College, Southampton; Peter McKie, chairman of PHM Associates; William Plowden, consultant on public management reform; and Jean Tomlin, human resource director and Prudential banking and operations director, Prudential Direct.

They replace Philip Evans,

Pat Lee, George Quigley and Heather Rabbatts, who are

retiring.

Six new members have been appointed to the board of the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta). They are: David Hargreaves, professor of education at the University of Cambridge; Paul Kelley, head teacher of Monseaton Language College; Sheila Penny, head teacher of Ladybrook Primary School; David Reynolds, professor of education at Loughborough University; John Taylor, principal of Park Lane College, Leeds; and Peter Weston, ICT adviser for Flintshire county council.

Other serving members of the Becta board are: Heather Du Quesnay, executive director of education, Lambeth; Lesley Anne Beddie, Napier University; Lorna Cocking, Addison Wesley Longman; Mary Marsh, head teacher of Holland Park School, London; Tom McMullan, director Class Project, Northern Ireland; and Dominic Savage, chief executive, British Educational Suppliers Association.

Wai-Sum Siu, who has held teaching posts at institutions including Hong Kong Baptist University and Nanjing University in China, has been appointed visiting professor at Middlesex University Business School, where he will pursue research into the marketing practices of Chinese small firms in the UK.

John Ireland, macroeconomist at the Fraser of Allander Institute on the Scottish Economy, University of Strathclyde, has been appointed director of the institute. He replaces Brian Ashcroft, who becomes the institute's first policy director, concentrating on research-based analysis of new policy initiatives.
