About Keio University

Basic information and contact details for Keio University

institution

Keio University is considered to be Japan’s oldest private university, founded in 1858 by the author and educator Yukichi Fukuzawa.

In his book, An Encouragement of Learning, Fukuzawa emphasised the importance of freedom, human rights and equality. Through it, he attempted to break free from the Confucian approach to education prevalent at the time by introducing a way of learning known as Jitsugaku  – or empirical science – an educational philosophy that continues to play an integral role at Keio to this day.

The symbol of Keio University is the “Pen Mark”, which was first used as an emblem by students in 1885 and is thought by some to have taken its inspiration from the saying “the pen is mightier than the sword”.

Today, the university plays host to more than 33,000 students and 2,250 academic staff at six main campuses in Tokyo and Kanagawa, along with five other campuses that have a specific research or academic purpose. It offers a comprehensive range of study programmes at 10 undergraduate faculties, 14 graduate schools and 30 research centres.

Many students are attracted by Keio’s international outlook: 14 of its degree programmes are taught entirely in English. Meanwhile its Japanese Language Programme supports specialist knowledge of the country and its culture.

Keio’s extensive library – one of the largest in Japan, with 175,000 works – holds a collection of rare books, including the first volume of Shinsen Tsukuba shū, written in the 15th century. It also houses a collection of rare western texts, including the only Gutenberg Bible in Asia, some of which are available to view in a digital gallery.

Its list of alumni includes three former prime ministers and two astronauts.

institution

University of Surrey

United Kingdom, Guildford

The University of Surrey is a global university with a world-class research profile and an enterprising and forward-thinking spirit, committed to research and innovation excellence and to benefitting the economy, society and the environment. Our researchers practise their excellence against the backdrop of our broad spectrum of technological, human, health and social sciences, and their uncommonly strong linkages forged in an integrated campus culture of cooperation. The Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) is dedicated to cutting-edge research, scholarship and teaching in translation, and related modalities of intra-lingual, cross-lingual and cross-modal communication, including modalities aimed at enhancing accessible communication. Since our foundation in 1982, we have contributed to the theoretical advancement of translation and interpreting studies, whilst achieving real-world applicability by studying translation and interpreting as socio-technological practices, highlighting their economic and social value and their role as an enabling force for a globally connected world. The role The Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) at University of Surrey is seeking a Research assistant in natural language processing for accessible science to contribute to the Terminology-Aware Machine Translation for Accessible Science (TaMTAS) project. The project is funded by EPSRC under the CHIST-ERA Call 2025: Science in Your Own Language. Bridging Machine Translation, Natural Language Processing, and scientific expertise, this project addresses the urgent need for accurate and accessible scientific communication by enabling multilingual access to scientific knowledge. It challenges the dominance of English in scientific dissemination and aims to empower both researchers and the general public to engage with science in their native languages. The project brings together an outstanding international consortium, including collaborators from Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Dublin City University and the University of Tartu. The appointed person will contribute mainly to WP4 (Terminology-aware Quality Estimation and Automatic Post-Editing (APE)) which will develop models capable of identifying and characterizing terminological errors, their span, and severity, focusing on critical domain errors. They will also contribute to WP5 (Text Augmentation) which will enhance scientific content for accessibility and educational reuse. The project will require collaboration with the partners of the project, preparation and presentation of research results. For this reason, the appointed candidate is expected to have good communication skills. About you We are seeking a Graduate Researcher with background in natural language processing, computational linguistics or related discipline to join the multidisciplinary team working on the project. The successful candidate will have experience with machine translation, text accessibility and the use of large language models (LLMs) in evaluation, as well as good programming skills. Familiarity with the use of LLMs for quality estimation like the GEMBA prompt is desirable. Knowledge of any of the languages of the consortium in addition to English (Spanish, Catalan, Estonian or Irish) would be a bonus. This is a part-time position available for 2 years with the possibility of extension till the end of the project (31/01/2029). How to apply To apply for this role, please upload a CV and submit a cover letter via the University website. In your cover letter, please make sure you explain why you are suitable for the job. University of Southampton

United Kingdom, Southampton

About the project You will join an interdisciplinary project delivered through a collaboration between the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, the School of Biological Sciences, and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southampton. Plants emit sound—particularly under stress—and may respond to sound in ways that influence physiology, root function and pollination. This project will combine experiments, analysis and multiphysics modelling to establish credible mechanisms, limits and open datasets for plant acoustic emission and reception. We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate with an acoustics background to lead the acoustic measurement and analysis components, working closely with biology and modelling colleagues in a vibrant interdisciplinary team. Key accountabilities / duties You will: Design, set up and deliver robust measurements of plant-generated acoustic emissions under controlled stress conditions. Undertake acoustic and vibroacoustic measurements including airborne acoustics, air-coupled ultrasonics, structural vibration/waves. Work in specialist facilities including anechoic chambers and controlled experimental environments, ensuring high-quality, repeatable data. Develop and apply signal processing workflows for weak transient signals, long-term monitoring, feature extraction and statistical analysis. Support sound playback/stimulation protocols for plant response and pollination experiments. Contribute to modelling activities through experimental design input and provision of validation datasets. Manage and curate research data, contributing to open and reproducible workflows (code, metadata and documentation) in line with project and UKRI expectations. Prepare research outputs including papers, conference presentations and contributions to shared project datasets. Candidate requirements Essential PhD (or near completion) or equivalent qualifications and experience in Acoustics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Signal Processing or a closely related discipline.
