The University of Oxford will award honorary degrees to: Kofi Annan , secretary general of the United Nations; Tim Berners-Lee , director of the Worldwide Web Consortium and co-inventor of the web; William Bowen , director of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and former provost and president of Princeton University; Gro Harlem Brundtland , director-general of the World Health Organisation and former prime minister of Norway; Eric Hobsbawm , emeritus professor of economic and social history, University of London; Walter Kohn , Nobel laureate and emeritus professor of physics, University of California; soprano Felicity Lott ; and Sir Gustav Nossal , immunologist and emeritus professor of the University of Melbourne.

Kingston University has awarded honorary degrees to: Muharem Avdispahic , of the University of Sarajevo; television presenter and author David Bellamy ; Sir Peter Bonfield , head of British Telecom; Baroness Audrey Emerton , chief commander, St John Ambulance; novelist and playwright Michael Frayn ; John Horder , president of the United Kingdom Centre for the Advancement of Interprofess-ional Education; Glenys Kinnock , MEP; Russian space scientist and director of the Khrunichev Research and Production Space Centre, Anatoly Kiselev ; internet expert Andrew Rickman ; blind disability campaigner Sir John Wall ; and children's author Jacqueline Wilson .

Sir Alfred Cuschieri , head of surgery and molecular oncology at the University of Dundee, is to receive the George Berci award from the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons .

Tony Cryer has been appointed director of the Academic Registry at the University of Cardiff . John Pierce , of Cardiff, has been awarded the Quad-L Award 2000 for his work in psychology by the University of New Mexico .
