We do like to be beside a ringroad

Managing Urban Tourism. First edition

五月 28, 2004

This book addresses a subject pertinent to tourism studies, urban studies, planning and public policy. The authors are both renowned and well-published experts on the tourism industry, and their expertise is evident in the book's breadth of themes.

While we may readily associate tourism with the seaside and countryside, it is increasingly central to the development of the urban landscape. Indeed, these days there seem to be few city regeneration projects, certainly in the developed world, that do not have tourism as a central feature. Witness, for example, the scramble to host "mega events" such as the Olympic Games, and the growth of "place marketing" - both covered here. The growth of travel, the desire to experience other cultures, the importance of tourism in regeneration and the changing nature of the city itself all contribute to making the subject both contemporary and important.

The content does not disappoint. It covers contemporary themes such as the post-industrial and postmodern city, regeneration and the growth of the city as a tourist site, and also more generic issues relating to urban tourism, such as supply, demand, impact, planning and marketing, using contemporary statistics and material and showing an awareness of the latest thinking. The book is densely packed with references to key authors and examples from around the world, yet it is lucidly written. Illustrations, photographs, tables and maps add to its readability and authority. Perhaps most important, the book makes a range of ideas from social theory, business and planning accessible - but not simplistic - for the undergraduate and postgraduate.
