Study at VSB-TUO

VSB-TUO currently offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programmes for more than 12,000 students in engineering, IT, technology, economics, and business administration. Seven faculties provide a range of courses, including many English-taught options for exchange students. Practical training is central to the curriculum, with around 50% of coursework practice-oriented, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the global job market. Furthermore, the PhD Academy offers courses to help doctoral students develop key skills for their scientific careers.

IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center (IT4Innovations)

IT4Innovations is a leading research, development, and innovation centre active in the fields of High-Performance Computing (HPC), Data Analysis (HPDA), Quantum Computing (QC), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and their application to other scientific fields, industry, and society. IT4Innovations operates the most powerful supercomputing systems in the Czech Republic. The key research areas include:

Centre for Energy and Environmental Technologies (CEET)

CEET as an excellent research interdisciplinary institute at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, founded in 2021, brings under one roof four research centres : the ENET Centrethe Nanotechnology Centrethe Institute of Environmental Technology and the Energy Research Centre. The research agenda is focused on the Materials for Energy and Environmental Technologies, Energy Utilisation of Secondary Raw Materials and Alternative Energy Sources, Energy Storage, Transformation and Management and Environmental Aspects and Technologies. With a strength of over 250 scientists and researchers, CEET is committed to conducting from basic to applied research with excellent results and their implementation in practical use. Together we develop new materials and technologies for low-carbon and sustainable energy and environmental technologies in accordance with the principles of the circular economy. Our common strategy is energy transformation, a topic that cuts across all areas of our lives, from transport to industry and the environment. Like the rest of the world, we are searching for emission-free sources while at the same time looking for solutions that avoid generating additional waste and fill-up landfills.

Campus Life

VSB-TUO boasts the largest campus in the Czech Republic and one of the largest in Central Europe, situated in the pleasant surroundings of Ostrava-Poruba, near a forest with paths for inline skating and cycling. The campus features cafes, sports facilities (beach-volleyball and tennis courts, football pitches, etc.), a library, a student relax zone, an art gallery, a geological pavilion, and an observatory and planetarium. These facilities host various events open to the public, including exhibitions, fairs, film screenings, concerts, and educational activities. The campus is well-connected by public transport to other parts of Ostrava.

Life in Ostrava

Ostrava, Czechia’s third-largest city, is a vibrant university hub where students make up about 10% of the population. The city offers numerous cultural and entertainment options, with excellent public transport links within the city and to major European capitals.  Ostrava is also home to the Colours of Ostrava and Beats for Love music festivals, which host artists from around the world every summer.

Industrial AI Algorithm and Autonomous Decision-Making Systems ​​​​​RESPONSIBILITIES Research and develop autonomous decision-making algorithms for process industries (e.g., chemical, pharmaceutical, materials, energy) or discrete manufacturing (e.g., electronics assembly, automotive, home appliances). Explore the integration of large language models and reinforcement learning for real-time optimization, fault self-recovery, and production scheduling in industrial processes. Publish research results in top-tier international conferences and journals, and participate in applying for domestic and international patents. Assist in supervising PhD and Master's students, and participate in the center's collaborative projects with industry partners to promote the industrialization of technology. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCES A Ph.D. (obtained or soon to be obtained) in Computer Science, Automation, Artificial Intelligence, Operations Research, or a related field. Solid research background and practical experience in one or more of the following areas: Reinforcement Learning / Deep Reinforcement Learning Fine-tuning and Application of Large Language Models Time-Series Data Prediction and Modeling Intelligent Decision-Making and Optimization Algorithms Strong programming skills (proficient in Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow, etc.). Industrial Digital Twin and Intelligent Control Systems RESPONSIBILITIES Develop industrial process digital twin models based on the fusion of mechanistic and data-driven approaches. Research advanced process control strategies and deploy them on the center's distributed control systems and edge computing devices. About the role:  The Waste & Resource Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting the effective management of waste and resources across King’s College London, including research and other hazardous or specialist waste streams. Sitting within the Sustainability Team in Estates & Facilities, this position is central to ensuring that King’s meets its legal obligations and ISO 14001 requirements while driving continual improvement in waste and resource practices. Reporting to the Sustainability Operations Manager, the postholder acts as the first point of contact for waste-related queries and provides operational advice to stakeholders across all campuses. You will maintain oversight of the waste budget, including forecasting, invoice validation, and reporting, ensuring cost-effective and transparent management of waste services. The role also involves maintaining accurate data inputs into a central Power BI system and interpreting complex datasets to inform decision-making and performance monitoring. Engagement and communication are key aspects of this role. You will attend regular user group and waste review meetings, deliver training tailored to different audiences, and collaborate on campaigns that promote best practice and behavioural change. The Waste & Resource Coordinator also represents King’s in sector networks, strengthening our profile and learning from industry developments. Compliance is a critical responsibility. Description The Center of Astrophysics and Space Science, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a Junior Research Scientist to work with the Mars Research Group to support scientific investigations of the Martian atmosphere and surface using data from the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) “Hope” probe. The position contributes to ongoing research, data analysis, simulation efforts, and dissemination of scientific results from Hope observations. The funding for this position is provided by the UAE Space Agency. The successful applicant will; Analyze Emirates Mars Mission (Hope) data: Conduct detailed analysis of atmospheric and surface observations collected by the UAE’s Hope probe to support scientific goals of understanding Martian atmospheric and surface processes. Assist with analysis of additional Mars mission datasets: Examine and interpret complementary data from other Mars missions to strengthen current models and provide comparative insights that enhance research conclusions from Hope observations. Develop Machine Learning methods and run numerical simulations on NYUAD’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) system. Support preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations: Assist in drafting reports, papers, and conference materials to communicate research findings to the global scientific community. A candidate with a Master’s degree is preferred; however, the minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in physics, computer science, or a related discipline. The role requires strong programming skills in Python, competency in data analysis and scientific computing, and the ability to work with large datasets. We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced senior research fellow to work on a £1m EPSRC-funded project to develop human-centred AI methods that can support and enhance intelligence analysis for national security and defence. The ‘AiTASHA’ project (AI Intelligence Triage & Acquisition Support for Human-centred Analysis) aims to improve the speed and confidence of intelligence analysts’ assessments by building new AI tools that can work alongside human analysts. Intelligence analysts are routinely required to make high-consequence, defensible assessments from vast, complex and uncertain datasets, to identify indicators and warnings of hostile or malicious activities. Analysts must make these assessments rapidly in a highly-pressured and resource-constrained environment, where they face difficult choices of what data to analyse first, and whether to gather additional intelligence, potentially at the cost of delay or increased risk. Addressing this challenge is becoming increasingly urgent as both the scale and complexity of intelligence datasets, as well as the threat posed to UK safety, are growing, and existing AI support tools primarily focus on the identification and visualisation of patterns within datasets, without due consideration of human understanding or context, defensibility, and representation of uncertainty. The goal of this ambitious project is to make fundamental advances that will together underpin and enable a future explainable, defensible AI system that can complement, rather than replace, the work of intelligence analysts; recommending which existing data should be prioritised for human review and which potential new data should be prioritised for acquisition. To address this challenge we will advance the state-of-the-art across multiple component disciplines; in explainable multi-modal deep learning models, in causal statistical models and in human-machine teaming and AI ethics. The researcher will conduct internationally-leading research in human factors with applications to intelligence analysis. This role will involve developing and applying methods for eliciting knowledge from expert analysts in order to encode understanding of their mental models into a machine learning model, using dynamic Bayesian networks to understand, propagate and reduce uncertainty in their assessments. The research will apply models of distributed situation awareness and ecological interface design techniques to develop a novel human-centred human-AI teaming model. The researcher will also be working closely with colleagues in statistical / graphical modelling as well as AI ethics, and will therefore need to be conversant in these areas. The role will be based at the University of Southampton as part of an interdisciplinary consortium on the AiTASHA project, which is led by the Alan Turing Institute and also includes the universities of Warwick, Cardiff and Dundee, working closely with UK government defence and national security partners. The successful candidate will join this vibrant and interdisciplinary team of researchers and will have frequent opportunities to engage with internal stakeholders and external government partners throughout the delivery of the project. During the project it is expected that they will work as part of a small tight-knit cohort of Early Career Researchers spanning the AiTASHA consortium universities. Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies The Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Business.  In the QS World University Rankings 2026, PolyU is ranked 54th overall, and ranked 10th in Asia.  The University of Texas at Dallas Top 100 Business School Research Rankings ranks our faculty’s research 35th in the world and 5th in Asia (as of March 2025). The Department currently has around 60 full-time academic staff who are dedicated to providing cutting-edge knowledge and practical skills for our students in three key areas of business — Supply Chain and Operations Management and Shipping, Maritime and Transport Studies. The Department takes a multi-disciplinary approach to establishing an area of excellence in logistics, supply chain, and operations management. It strives to be a key player in Hong Kong’s pursuit to become an international logistics hub. A full range of programmes are offered leading to the awards of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science, and Bachelor of Business Administration. The Department’s research portfolio lies in both academic and applied research.  Professional services to industries are also provided by the academic staff in the form of consultancy in such areas as efficiency and quality improvement studies, market and operational analyses, optimisation, production, purchasing, and supply chain management. The University is now inviting applications and nominations for the post of Head of Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies. The successful candidate will be appointed Chair Professor/Professor normally on regular terms of appointment (equivalent to tenured professorship), commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience, and will hold a concurrent headship appointment. The concurrent headship appointment is normally for an aggregate period of six years in two three-year terms of office. Other suitable candidate(s) from the search, if deemed appropriate by the University, may be appointed Chair Professor/Professor if not as Head of Department. Job Functions The position calls for a visionary academic leader with responsibilities of ensuring the smooth and successful operation and sustainable development of the Department.  Reporting directly to the Dean of Faculty of Business, the appointee will be required to: (a) provide effective leadership in the development of long-term strategies and plans of the Department, in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan; and coach and empower subordinates so that they can accomplish planned objectives with world-class standards and in an effective and efficient manner; (b) ensure high-quality teaching as well as holistic development of the students, and align the Department’s programmes with the needs of the community; (c) facilitate the conduct of innovative and original research of high quality and impact, and promote and develop genuine interdisciplinary / departmental research with the optimal use of research funds; (d) provide leadership in technology development, commercialisation and entrepreneurship initiatives to extend the impact of research outcomes of the University to the community; (e) provide leadership in developing a strong network of partnership with leading tertiary institutions for opportunities and collaboration in education, research and knowledge transfer activities; (f) enhance the local and international networks of partnerships and linkages with the community, particularly the professional, public and business sectors, so as to gain their support for the major strategic initiatives of the University; (g) ensure effective internal communication that leads to a transparent decision-making process and promote the Department’s strengths and other services to all relevant stakeholders; (h) ensure optimal deployment of human, financial and other resources in the Department; (i) implement an effective mechanism to acquire donations and other forms of sponsorship to support the University’s pursuits and long-term development; and (j) undertake other duties as assigned by the Dean of Faculty or the Central Management Team of the University from time to time. Qualifications Applicants should have: (a) academic qualifications at the doctoral level in a relevant academic discipline, evidence of eminent scholarship and substantial relevant experience in a senior academic position, and relevant professional qualifications and registration where appropriate; (b) attainment of an academic rank of full professor or above at an internationally recognised university; (c) a distinguished international reputation in research and scholarship, and demonstrated international leadership in any one or more of the specialist areas, namely (i) Supply Chain and Operations Management; and (ii) Shipping, Maritime and Transport Studies, or a related discipline;  (d) a strong record in attracting competitive research funding and working with industry; (e) a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching; (f) a global perspective, proven qualities of academic leadership and substantial administration / management experience, as well as the demonstrated ability of building up a strong team of faculty members with different research and cultural backgrounds; (g) effective interpersonal communication and resources management skills, and excellent adaptability to changes and challenges; (h) good knowledge of the higher educational environment in the local and global context; and (i) a high standard of personal integrity.
