The University of Seoul was founded in 1918 as Kyung Sung Public Agricultural College. It places a strong emphasis on environmental engineering, urban planning, taxation science, transport and landscape engineering.

In addition, the university offers vocational courses. The institution is one of the most prestigious in the country and associates itself with the ideals of liberal education, peace-keeping and democracy-building.

 The university campus includes more than 220 buildings spreading over more than 4 million square meters. Luckily there is an app that helps students get their heads round the immense campus.

Mostly funded by the state, the University of Seoul has a culture of social involvement. Students regularly get involved in volunteering and social work. As a result, the Social Welfare Center on the main campus assists the needs of more than 100,000 senior citizens and disabled people per year.

The university encourages social engagement by offering a yearly Service to Society Award to a faculty member committed to helping others.

The university has formed many of South Korea’s political and cultural personalities. Notable alumni in politics include Ahn Cheol-soo, founder of security software provider Ahnlab; UN ex-Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; Korea’s 1988 Prime Minister Lee Hyun-jae; South Korea’s former president Kim Young-Sam; and minister of foreign affairs between 2008 and 2010, Yu Myung-hwan.

Alumni in arts, academia and culture include authors Yangji Lee, Kim Chi-Ha, Kim Seungok; film directors Jo Sung-hee, Jang Sun-woo and Min Kyu-dong; painter Oh Junggeun and Lee Ufan; architects Kim Swoo Geun and Min Hyun Sik and others.

The University of Seoul gives yearly prizes to an alumnus to honour outstanding achievements.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF ROBOTICS The School of Robotics is one of the seven industry-themed Schools in the XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang). Each School consists of an Education, Research and Development Institute (ERDI) for teaching and research collaboration, a one-stop School Office providing professional services to support student administration and activities, members of staff, and industry partners, and an affiliated School Joint-Venture Company jointly established by XJTLU and the School’s partner for industry-embedded teaching, learning, practical, and other activities. The governance of the School is through a School Council. The Dean of School oversees the School Management Team as well as contributing to the leadership of the college. The School of Robotics is jointly developed by the University and an industry partner – Siasun, to deliver the industry-themed programme(s). The first degree programme that the School has launched for the Academic Year 2019/2020 is BEng Intelligent Robotics Engineering with Contemporary Entrepreneurship. ABOUT THE DIRECTOR OF ERDI Working with the Dean of School, the main duties of this position include: Lead the design and development of syntegrative projects in schools in particular the integration across programmes or even across Schools. Engage actively with new educational models and embrace innovative, interactive, technology-enhanced learning, teaching, and assessment approaches. Create, nurture, and support a healthy industry-focused research environment, with agreed annual research outcomes and expectations agreed with the School Dean and wider Entrepreneur College. Lead and manage the School’s business engagement initiatives with a view to building an extensive portfolio of potential industry collaborative partnerships, working with the College’s Business Development team. Working with the Business Development team, identify and implement strategies to maximise research income, with a focus on business/industry, and develop syntegrative projects from industry that leads the learning and teaching in schools. Drive an emphasis on impact-creation through sustainable and unique value proposition in improving the School’s funded quality research and innovation and/or knowledge exchange activities, with a focus on industry. Support innovative cross-disciplinary research and become an ambassador for the School in promoting cross-boundary research and teaching activities through Centre of Excellence. Act as coordinator in schools in contributing to the development of XEC Innovation Factory, X3Co-Venture, and Non-degree Education. Manage the operation of research in schools including RDF, SURF, and present the school in University Research Committee. Support the XEC research coordinator in terms of PGRS operation. Represent and deputise for the Dean of School where necessary, within the College, University and externally as appropriate. Mentor and support early career academics, and undertaking reasonable administrative responsibilities in line with the college WAM.  Any other appropriate tasks assigned by the University’s SMT, School Council or Taicang’s Leadership Team through the Dean of School. Be familiar with and observe China and United Kingdom’s rules, and regulations of higher education.  Possess and demonstrate excellent leadership and management experience, and ability to motivate and inspire teams. Demonstrate excellent organisational and implementation skills, and experience of working towards and meeting set targets, evidenced by important activities, events, projects in their past career. Be able to demonstrate impact in any of the academic fields relevant to the School.  Demonstrate rich experience in some or all of the following; teaching, research, academic leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship, strategic planning and financial management in a university and/or business environment. Have a good sense of business and industry trend, and can demonstrate a good track record of industry engagement in various forms.  Demonstrate a high level of inter-cultural competence, especially in how industry operates within China. Some experience of working in a relevant industry would be an advantage. The initial appointment will be for two years, subject to performance and funding. The position combines independent research with editorial and management responsibilities for the journal Philosophy of AI, the diamond open-access journal of the Society for the Philosophy of AI (https://journals.ub.uni-koeln.de/index.php/phai). This is a 50/50 position. Half the time will be devoted to the appointee’s own philosophical research on AI. The other half will be devoted to editorial and management work for the journal, in collaboration with the journal’s editors in Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and Germany. Editorial and management responsibilities include coordinating the peer‑review process; communicating with authors and referees; assisting with special issues and symposia; maintaining the journal’s editorial workflow; and contributing to the journal’s strategic development. The appointee will work under the supervision of Professor Herman Cappelen (HKU) and in close coordination with the journal’s other editors, Guido Löhr (VU Amsterdam) and Vincent C. Müller (FAU Erlangen‑Nürnberg). On the research side, the appointee will pursue an independent research programme in the philosophy of AI and participate in the activities of the AI & Humanity Lab, including seminars, workshops, and lab events. Applicants should have completed a Ph.D. in philosophy or a closely related field by the time of appointment and must be based in Hong Kong. The position is open to candidates working in philosophy of AI or a neighbouring area (e.g., philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, epistemology, ethics of AI, or philosophy of technology). Strong organisational and communication skills are required. Editorial experience is an advantage but not essential. Candidates should be able to work independently and coordinate effectively with collaborators across time zones. Building on past projects, it focuses on designing durable systems, using advanced controls to adapt to wear and tear, and supporting a circular supply chain. With Operations & Maintenance (O&M) making up 30% of costs, INFINITY emphasizes reliability and predictive maintenance to extend service intervals from 2 to 5 years and cut costs by 50%. These innovations aim to overcome barriers to wave energy adoption, making it more practical, cost-effective, and a viable renewable energy source. The project team is composed of leading academic and industry collaborators from: RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Ocean Harvesting Technologies, Politecnico di Torino, The Technical University Denmark etc. This project is funded through the EU’s Clean Energy Transition Partnership with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, and the successful candidate will join a group of around 30 postdoctoral, PhD and other researchers in COER, who work on the development of wave energy technology, with projects funded from various national and international sources.
