Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh (UoE) is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Britain and Ireland’s seven ancient universities.

It is made up of three colleges: arts, humanities and social sciences; science and engineering and medicine and veterinary medicine. Within these three colleges, there are 20 academic schools.

In total, the university attracts around 35,000 students, the majority of which study within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Science, the largest of its colleges.

Its College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine is reputed to be a world-leader in its field.

UoE is an internationally-focussed university and welcomes students from all corners of the globe, with the majority coming from China and the United States.

Its students can also take advantage of the Go Abroad Fund, which provides grants for 250 or students to have a short-term international experience each year. Additionally, students are also encouraged to either study or work abroad as part of their course.

The university receives over £200 million in research income. It spends over £26 million on prizes, scholarships, studentships and bursaries. At around £317 million, it has the third largest endowment of any UK university after Oxford and Cambridge.

A total of 20 Nobel laureates are affiliated with the University of Edinburgh. These include winners of Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Peace, Literature and the Memorial Prize in Economic Science.

Alumni include Charles Darwin, David Hume, Alexander Graham Bell and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, among many others.

Situated in the heart of the historic capital of Scotland, the city of Edinburgh is home to the Scottish Parliament, an ancient volcanic rock and an iconic castle.

Description The research group of Prof. Ingyin Zaw at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking to add a Research Scientist in Extragalactic Astronomy to study the impact Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) have on their host galaxies. Applicants with a background analyzing and interpreting astrophysical data, in particular the statistical analysis of data obtained by large surveys, are encouraged to apply. Terms of employment include competitive salary and benefits. Research in the Prof. Zaw’s group focuses AGN activity and feedback which are critical components of current theories of galaxy evolution. Project include collaborations with researchers in Physics program and Center for Astrophysics and Space Science (CASS) at NYU Abu Dhabi, as well as researchers at the Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics (CCPP) at NYU New York. Researchers are NYUAD have access to numerous high performance computing facilities, as well as access to sponsored time on several observing facilitates. Responsibilities of the position include using advanced statistical and Machine Learning techniques to study AGN properties, galaxy properties, and the relationships between them in large samples of galaxies, as well as participating in other research activities of the group. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree, or equivalent, in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics or related field, and at least 6 years of research experience (Excluding the years taken to complete their PhD). The ideal candidate will have extensive experience analyzing and interpreting astrophysical data – especially that obtained from larger surveys, and strong computational skills. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience and interest in using advanced statistical / machine learning techniques to study the correlation between variables. Mikko Niemi’s research group at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of a POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER to work in the Food and Drug Security Systems, Profi8 -project, starting as soon as possible or agreed. The employment is fixed term and ends on 31.12.2031. Summary of the project and research group descriptions  The research action Systems of Food and Drug Security (fooDrug) brings together University of Helsinki research across nine different units, to address challenges relating to the production, processing, distribution and use of food and drug products without compromising human safety, health, and cultural and social acceptance. We will enable the development of a more holistic, efficient and safe approach to new food and drugs and related technologies, as exemplified by advances in pharmacogenomics and nanomedicine, novel viral vectors, new food materials, improved food hygiene and enhanced human sensory experience. The postdoctoral researcher will work in Professor Mikko Niemi’s research group, which is internationally recognized for research in clinical pharmacology, pharmacogenetics, and individualized drug therapy. The group is expanding its activities toward AI-driven clinical data analysis, modelling, prediction, and decision-support systems related to pharmacogenomics, food–drug interactions, drug safety, and personalized health. The successful candidate will contribute to developing and applying artificial intelligence and machine learning methods to large-scale clinical, biomedical, pharmacological, and food-related datasets, supporting the goals of the Profi8 profiling area. Work with large, heterogeneous datasets (e.g. clinical, genomic, pharmacological, nutritional or real‑world data). Contribute to interdisciplinary research combining medicine, pharmacology, food science and data science. Publish research results in high-quality international journals. Participate in national and international research collaborations. Contribute to project reporting, grant preparation, mentoring of junior researchers and other research‑related and administrative tasks when appropriate. Qualifications A doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in a relevant field such as: Artificial Intelligence Computer Science Data Science Statistics Bioinformatics Computational biology The degree requirement must be met by the beginning of the employment. Scientific competence in developing AI methods, with proven publication record in scientific venues in the field, as well as programming skills. Scientific interest and contributions within drug, genomics, and/or clinical research, ideally with publications appearing in top-tier venues. Applicants with publications in a closely related field, but not exactly within the scope of the position, are asked to describe why their background is suitable for the position.   Experience in working with real-world, high-dimensional or biomedical datasets Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team Strong teamwork skills and a proactive, collaborative mindset Good written and oral communication skills in English Finnish language skills are considered an advantage, but are not required The chosen applicant is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki.
