Archaeologists have discovered the outline of a late Iron-Age settlement on the campus of the University of Warwick.
The discovery marks the earliest evidence of Neolithic people living within the modern boundary of the city of Coventry before the arrival of the Romans.
The site, believed to date from 1st century BC, was uncovered during the construction of a £365,000 all-weather sports pitch. It contains the outline of 15 Stone Age buildings and a Neolithic pathway.
Artefacts unearthed include pots placed in the walls of buildings as offerings to the gods and a rare pottery oil lamp. Warwick said construction of the sports pitch would resume once the site had been fully investigated and all artefacts removed.
