University of Southampton - Just say 'no' to oil, group tells v-c

A group of academics is calling on the University of Southampton's new vice-chancellor to transform the institution into the country's first "transition" university. The transition movement aims to create communities capable of existing without dependence on fossil fuels. Crisis Forum, a group of academics that believes that "humankind is in serious trouble", wants the university to shun foreign conferences, buy local food and teach overseas students at a distance rather than on campus. Its ideas are contained in a 400-page document, Creating Our Future, which will be handed to Don Nutbeam, the incoming vice-chancellor, this month.
