Appointments

The following have been appointed pro vice-chancellors by Cambridge University: Andrew Cliff , professor of theoretical geography and a fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge; Ian Leslie , head of the Cambridge computer laboratory; Melveena McKendrick , professor of Spanish golden-age literature, culture and society and chair of the board of modern and medieval languages; and Kate Pretty , principal of Homerton College and former chair of the council of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

David Belbyn , children's author, has been appointed course leader of Nottingham Trent University's MA in creative writing.

Catherine Swarbrick , secretary of St George's Hospital Medical School, has been appointed director of administration and clerk of the council at London University. She succeeds John Davidson, who retires in June.

The University of Wales has appointed Antony Chapman , vice-chancellor of the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, its next senior vice-chancellor. He succeeds Derec Llwyd Morgan, vice-chancellor of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, who retires in September.

York University has appointed two chairs of social policy and demography: John Hobcraft , professor of population studies, chairman of the population investigation committee and chairman of the Methodology Institute at London School of Economics and Political Science; and Kathleen Kiernan , professor of social policy at demography and LSE, co-director of the Economic and Social Research Council's Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion and visiting scholar at Princeton University's Centre for Health and Wellbeing.
