Applications are invited from basic science or clinically qualified research workers for the award of the first round of Wellcome International Research Fellowships to be taken up in 2003. Candidates should note that this award is high-profile and extremely competitive. It is envisaged that only 10 to 15 awards will be made during any one year. Only one application can be made by an individual in any twelve month period.

These fellowships are intended to provide further research experience for basic science or clinically qualified researchers in leading laboratories overseas. Fellowships will be awarded for a four year period, with two to three years spent in a host country and the remaining time in an appropriate laboratory in either the UK or the Republic of Ireland. Research proposals may be in any branch of the basic or clinical sciences, which has a bearing on human or veterinary medicine, with the exception of cancer, for which support is restricted.
