Brussels, 06 Apr 2006

A symposium to debate the implications of free or open-source software and medicine will be held at the UN in New York on 13 April, entitled 'Challenging intellectual property: access to knowledge issues in open source and medicine.'

The symposium will analyse the implications of bio-intellectual property ownership, open source software and how it can contribute to economic development, and the consequences for science and society of, for example, the human genome project - who, if anyone, should control access to it?

Speakers will include members of the UNU-MERIT (United Nations University - Maastricht Economic and social research and training centre on innovation and technology) project, the UN Joint Inspection Unit, the Wellcome Trust and the Brazilian national institute for information technology.
