Brussels, 24 January 2002

The proposal was made during the European Conference on the use of new technologies in relation to drugs trafficking, held in Madrid as one of the initiatives of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.

The twenty conclusions drawn up at the meeting, which was attended by representatives of the Member States, the European Commission, Europol, three candidate countries (Latvia, Romania and Slovenia) and the United States, constitute a very positive outcome.

The participants included individuals in charge of operations in police and customs agencies with responsibility for administering and managing special technical resources for intelligence work and investigation focusing on drugs trafficking and money laundering associated with criminal organisations.
