Outstanding Research on Development

The award for outstanding research on development of $125,000 will be given to the individual, group or institution whose research in one of the five topic areas holds the greatest promise for improving our understanding of development. Award funds will be used to support future efforts to build upon and develop completed or ongoing research. In selecting the winner, consideration will be given to degree of innovation, quality of execution, and potential for follow-up on research. Research papers will be considered in the following

categories:

- escaping poverty

- building the institutional foundations of a market economy

- gender and development

- environmental and social sustainability

- science and technology for development

Abstract deadline:

June 30. Full proposal deadline: August 31.

All applications and papers must be submitted as electronic files - either through email or through the website. If lwithout email poses an obstacle write to: Global Development Network, Research Award and Medal Competition, GDN Secretariat c/o Lyn Squire, 1818 H Street, World Bank, Washington DC 20433, USA.

ISAAC NEWTON

INSTITUTE FOR

MATHEMATICAL

SCIENCES

Call for Proposals

The institute aims to bring mathematical scientists from UK universities and leading experts from overseas together for concentrated research on specialised topics in all branches of the mathematical sciences. The institute now invites new proposals for programmes for 2002 onwards. A choice of six-month or four-month programmes is available. In addition, from 2002, short programmes of four weeks duration will be available during July/August each year. These short programmes are intended for more narrowly focused topics or for subjects that may be at an embryonic stage of development, and for which a longer programme might not be as yet justified. Proposals should follow the guidelines given on the website and be addressed to: The Director, Professor Keith Moffatt, Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, 20 Clarkson Road, Cambridge CB3 0EH, UK; proposers should state whether they would prefer a four-month, six-month or four-week programme. Next deadline: June 30. Further information is available from the director (email: info@newton.cam.ac.uk; tel: 01223 335999).

Oil and Gas Extraction Programme

Proposals are now invited under the third and final round of the EPSRC/DTI oil and gas extraction programme, which will commit funding of around Pounds 2 million to new projects. Proposals will be accepted from those organisations eligible to receive LINK and EPSRC funding. The scientific and technology development aims of the third call are as follows:

- to reduce the environmental impact of oil and gas activities

- to improve the effectiveness of oil and gas discovery and assessment technologies

- to improve the economics and the effectiveness of oil and gas drilling technology

- to improve the effectiveness of oil and gas reservoir management

- to improve the safety, economics and effectiveness of oil and gas infrastructure design and

operation. Deadline: July 31. Full details on the website. For further information contact David Holtum at EPSRC (tel: 01793 444478 email: david.holtum@epsrc.ac.uk).

MOTOR NEURONE

DISEASE ASSOCIATION

Research Grants

The MND Association supports research on all aspects of motor neurone disease (MND), in all relevant disciplines. The objectives of the biomedical research programme are to understand the cause of and research effective treatments for MND.

Research Project Grants

Applications will be judged on the key criterion of scientific merit, although special consideration will be given to projects which feature collaborative or multidisciplinary research.

Pump Priming Grants

Grants of 12-18 months duration will be awarded to permit preliminary research. Key criteria will be scientific potential and an established record of research achievement. For full application details and forms contact Marion Reichle, Research Administrator, MND Association, PO Box 246, Northampton NN1 2PR (tel: 01604 250505; fax: 01604 638289). Initial applications should be made by submitting a brief (two-page) summary of the proposed project. Next deadline: June 9.

Partnerships in Science and Technology

Joint Research

Programmes

Aims to promote the development of scientific co-operation between research institutes and tertiary education institutions of the two countries. The programme is essentially for research and technological development, limited in time and with clear objectives, established between research groups from each country. Each research group should nominate a project leader, who will be responsible for all correspondence in relation to the application and subsequently to it. The 2001 - 2003 call for proposals comprises two joint research programmes, one each in the fields of: - forestry and silviculture - applications of space technologies.

Each project should normally last one to two years, starting in April 2001. The programme provides grants for travel and subsistence costs, and financial support towards running costs and consumables. Applications should be made jointly by both groups. Application forms are available from the General Secretariat of Research & Technology, 14-18 Messogion Avenue, 115 10 Athens, Greece, or from The British Council, 17 Kolonaki Square, PO Box 3488, 102 10 Athens, Greece.
