Possible pointer to reversing diabetes

十月 12, 2007

Australian researchers have found a way to reverse diabetes in rats, which could point to a cure for the disease in humans.

The team at Sydney University of Technology put insulin-producing genes into the livers, rather than the pancreases, of rats with chemically induced diabetes.

Once injected, the rats could regulate their sugar intake using their liver. The process reversed diabetes for up to 500 days. The team will now carry out tests on mice that developed diabetes in a similar manner to humans in order to verify that the immune system does not start to attack the liver.
