Sir Kenneth Calman bet on a horse that should run and run at York racecourse last week when, in his after-dinner speech as chairman for the Institute for Learning and Teaching's annual conference, he challenged members to think of alternative meanings for the ILT acronym. Under the Durham University vice-chancellor's starter's orders were "I Love Teaching" followed by "I Like Talking" and the cheeky "Indiscretions of Laurie Taylor". But for tired delegates waiting half an hour for their coach to return them to the York University campus, only to find ILT chief executive Paul Clark was the last on, the collective shout was "Irritatingly Late Transport".
