Managing port operations with graphics

A Eureka project has developed a graphic screen enabling port managers and administrators to plan port operations, visualising the impact of one activity on another.

Ports deal with huge amounts of cargo - and therefore operations and data - daily. Everything must be coordinated, from crane movements to parking lorries and loading freight onto ships. GHADIS (graphical harbour disposition and information system) is able to make port operations simple and efficient, while saving both time and money.

'GHADIS is easy to use and saves time by using visual information and intuitive systems rather than tables or written information,' says Horst Pahl, Managing director of the project's lead partner, Travemünder Datenverbund.

The systems offers an overview of the whole terminal, as well as more detailed views with zoom functionality. It provides a picture of an estimated situation within the harbour at a certain point of time, and administrators can use a drag and drop interface to simulate the impact of operations.

GHADIS can also be used to control tasks. It can even create crane orders to coordinate and manage the loading and unloading of dangerous or perishable cargo.

The second partner in the project was the Swedish port of Trelleborg, acting as both consultant and test facility. The technology has since been tested at other ports in Germany, and marketing of the system is now underway.

The partners have high hopes for GHADIS, and believe that it has applications outside of ports: 'GHADIS could be used in any other field where graphic data could be interpreted more easily than a printed version or on-screen tables,' says Mr Pahl.
