Continuing funding cuts may raise fears about the survival of higher education institutions, but at least one university can be confident of a happy and secure future. The final episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation revealed that in the 24th century, Data the android has become Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge, and is living in the house which belonged to his illustrious predecessor in the post, Sir Isaac Newton. Jean-Luc Picard, captain of the Enterprise, looks round the book-lined study, and remarks: "They certainly treat professors very well at Cambridge."
