A university education may be food for thought, but it appears that it can also be a recipe for piling on the pounds.

Nicola Samson, a graduate of Heriot-Watt University, revealed to her local paper that she gained a stone in weight for every year she spent at university. Boring lectures, she said, drove her to munch her way through chocolate bars, while exam stress saw her devour huge bags of sweets. But nights out drinking vodka and diet cola followed by midnight takeaways or snacks of cheese toasties didn't help.

In this obesity-conscious age, should undergraduate life come with a health warning?
