Glasgow Caledonian University - The loan ranger strikes again

Microbanking pioneer and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is one step closer to realising his vision for a social bank to serve the citizens of Glasgow. The economist met with John Swinney, Scottish secretary for finance and sustainable growth, to discuss the formation of Britain's first Grameen Bank. Grameen Glasgow would be the first UK bank to offer small low-cost loans to poor aspiring businesspeople, a concept that Dr Yunus pioneered in Bangladesh. The meeting was hosted by Glasgow Caledonian University, which is carrying out longitudinal research into the impact of social-business creation in disadvantaged communities.
