The European Union and Japan have highlighted their common objectives in the field of climate change research, and have pledged to strengthen scientific cooperation in the near future.
The commitment was made following a meeting of Japanese and European researchers and science policy makers at the third EU-Japan workshop on climate change research in Yokohama.
During the event, participants exchanged information on ongoing activities under the EU Sixth Framework Programme's 'global change and ecosystems' priority, as well as Japan's climate change research programme. According to a joint statement: 'It was recognized that common objectives exist between these programmes which provide new opportunities for further strengthening research cooperation in the near future.'
Having underlined their commitment to increased collaboration, the two parties then identified a number of emerging research themes of mutual interest relating to the detection and projection of climate change. These include:
- climate change projection modelling, such as high-resolution global and regional
modelling techniques, covering access to data from Japanese global modelling projects
and invitations to attend relevant EU project meetings;
- the recognition of East Asia as a region of intense scientific interest in terms
of atmospheric changes, leading to discussions between European and Japanese scientists
on plans for future large-scale research projects in the field of atmospheric changes;
- the identification of gaps in climate ground- and ocean-based observations,
especially in Asia and Africa, as well as the sharing, archiving and distribution of
data from existing observation systems as the basis for successful cooperation.
It was agreed that cooperation on future projects would be undertaken where there are areas of common interest, and that joint scientific events on specific topics will be organised on a regular basis to further enhance cooperation.
