Contracting career services proves costly

THE LAST government's 1994 decision to transfer responsibility for careers services from local education authorities to private contractors has cost the Department for Education and Employment Pounds 6 million in administration costs, the National Audit Office has found. The standard of the contracted-out services, helping young people to enter education, training and work, had improved, but there was still potential for "further advancement".
