HSE University (National Research University Higher School of Economics) is a young, dynamic university and one of most prestigious institutions of higher education in Russia, the CIS and Eastern Europe. In just over two decades since it was established in 1992, it has grown from a specialized institution focused on social and economic sciences to a comprehensive university engaged in multidisciplinary research, international cooperation and digital education. With more than 40,000 students on four campuses in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Perm, HSE University is currently one of the largest universities in Russia.

HSE offers high quality education at all levels – from a lyceum for school students to post-graduate and MBA programmes. Students can pursue training in a number of fields, including the social sciences, economics, humanities, law, engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and biotechnology, as well as in creative disciplines. HSE is the only university in Russia that is ranked in top 100 of the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings.

HSE was one of the first universities in Russia to develop digital instruments for use in education. Today, HSE ranks 5th worldwide by the number of courses on the global online-platform Coursera. HSE's English-taught online specialization, Advanced Machine Learning, was the first course in Russia to receive the Outstanding Educator Award from Coursera in the Innovation category.

Our faculty, researchers, and students – representing over 100 countries – are dedicated to maintaining the highest academic standards.  HSE University operates more than 100 research institutes and centres, and around 40 international laboratories are led by internationally renowned scholars, including Nobel laureate Eric Maskin and Fields medal laureate Andrey Okunkov. Moreover, as a leading centre for expert analysis, HSE plays an active role in developing legislation, policies, and strategies for federal and regional implementation.

HSE University offers more than 240 bachelor’s and master’s programmes in business and economics, computer science, art and design, social sciences, international relations, political science, communications and media, humanities, law, mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, and urban studies. It features more than 55 double degree programmes with leading universities around the world, such as the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), University Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne, George Mason University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Humboldt University of Berlin, Kyung Hee University in Asia and others. HSE University has 459 cooperation and/or student exchange agreements with 367 international partners from 63 countries. International students currently make up 10 percent of HSE’s student body.

HSE students enjoy benefits such as individualized curricula, strong academic support and emphasis on experiential learning. Students can choose up to a third of the courses required for their majors, thereby designing a course of study that is closely aligned with their interests and professional aspirations. Academic mentors assist students in designing their curricula and support them in their project work and research. Twenty percent of degree credits are earned through project work, enabling students to learn though ‘on-the-job’ experiences that prepare them for post-graduation employment.

HSE University collaborates with both global and Russian industry leaders, as well as academic institutions, thereby allowing students to pursue internships in top firms, international research centres, and the Russian Academy of Science.

HSE University also offers short-term non-degree programmes. These include a semester in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg or Nizhny Novgorod; the Summer University; as well as summer and winter schools in various fields.

The Summer University at HSE is an innovative programme that gives students, PhD candidates, postdocs and professionals from around the world unique opportunities to enhance their knowledge in area studies and other subjects. Featuring a broad selection of courses in a variety of disciplines, the Summer University is open to all students and is targeted in particular to those who study international relations, history, political science, as well as other social sciences and humanities.

Doing Business in Russia is an educational module that combines practical experiences through internships with theoretical knowledge in the classroom to give a wide-reaching introduction to Russia’s business culture. By offering students a unique opportunity to acquire experience that is essential for a successful career, it also helps them build a network that will benefit their further professional activity in Russia.

Additionally, HSE also runs Russian language preparatory courses (basic, intensive and extended courses) for international students who plan to enter a Russian-taught full-degree programme at HSE or another Russian university, as well as an English Preparatory Programme in Economics.

The HSE International Admissions website is now available in Chinese and Arabic.

Five Common Myths about Studying in Russia

As a research university, we strongly believe that students should learn from people who conduct cutting-edge research. To this end, HSE University strives to create an international academic environment where both students and academic staff can thrive.

While studying or working at HSE University, international students, faculty members, and researchers become members of a diverse, multi-lingual academic community. And beyond the premises of HSE University’s campuses, international students and faculty in Moscow and other cities enjoy access to world-class theatres, museums, historic sites, public parks, diverse dining, and a vibrant night life.

Russia’s cities represent a fascinating mélange of old meets new. In Moscow, for example, visitors can explore the Kremlin, which houses cathedrals dating back to the 15th century, admire one of the monolithic, gothic-style Seven Sister skyscrapers built under Stalin, or take a walk amongst the breathtaking contemporary high-rises in Moscow’s new financial district, Moscow-City.

While some knowledge of Russian will certainly be an asset to any foreign visitor of these cities, it is not required. Most businesses and cultural sites have English-speaking staff. International students have the option of living in university dormitories, which are located throughout the city, while international faculty members and post-doctoral fellows have the option of living in university housing if they prefer not to rent an apartment. The locations of HSE University’s student and faculty housing allow HSE international campus members to fully immerse themselves in city life while enjoying access to onsite staff support.
