The creation of a new European body, the European Consortium for Research in IORT Studies (ECRIS), to study intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT), was announced on 28 February.
Bringing together nine hospitals, institutes and universities from Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands and Germany, as well as two US universities, ECRIS will study tumour sites in pancreatic cancer, rectal cancer, sarcomas, lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and paediatric cancer.
The first organisational meeting of the new body will take place at the University of Piemonte Orientale in Novara Italy in April. 'The concept of ECRIS has been very positively received and we expect a number of additional European centres to join our efforts in the near future,' said Marco Krengli, Professor of Radiation Oncology at the university. 'Cooperation among European IORT centres will enable us to obtain answers on the proper role of integrating IORT in the management of our cancer patients much more quickly than if we each worked alone. We anticipate that the member institutions involved with ECRIS will grow as more centres develop IORT capability over the next few years,' added Professor Krengli.
ECRIS is unique in that it will facilitate the instigation of prospective studies in IORT, explain the partners. With more than 30,000 cancer patients undergoing treatment every year at the partner centres, ECRIS is expected to significantly increase the number of IORT patients taking part in the study.
