UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON. John Palmer, chairman of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, chairman of the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology and vice-president of the Foundation for Science and Technology, has been elected chancellor, succeeding George Jellicoe. Raymond Plant, former professor of politics, currently Opposition spokesperson on home affairs in the House of Lords, has been appointed pro-chancellor.

NAPIER UNIVERSITY. Lindsay Stewart, former chairman of the Design Council in Scotland, current trustee and vice-chairman of the board of governors of George Heriot's School and patron of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, has been appointed chairman of the court, succeeding Tony Bridge.

PRESERVATION ADVISORY COUNCIL. Valerie Ferris, head of the national preservation office at the British Library, has been appointed to the Preservation Advisory Council of the US-based Research Libraries Group, the first council member elected from an institution outside North America.
