The treatment of incarcerated women and children will be among the issues studied at the new Centre for Prison Studies at the University of Salford. The first of its kind outside London, the centre will bring together researchers and prison staff to study penal policy and practice. Its director, Elaine Crawley, said: "Our aim is to provide a forum for practitioners and researchers to share ideas related to penal philosophy, prison policy and prison practice."
