The New Zealand Government is investing more than £100,000 in a UK centre devoted to the study of the Antipodean country. The Birkbeck Centre for New Zealand Studies, based at the University of London, brings together the work, research and resources of a dispersed group of academics in the field; it also acts as a base for visiting Kiwi academics. "This centre is the only one of its kind in Europe to focus solely on New Zealand," said Helen Clark, the Prime Minister of New Zealand.
