Brussels, 14 March 2002

The Hungarian Minister of Education, József Pálinkás, has announced the introduction of a new fellowship for foreign researchers, aimed at promoting excellence within Hungary.

The objective of the Szent-Györgyi fellowship, named after the Nobel prize winner, is to enable foreign researchers and Hungarian researchers living abroad to contribute to the scientific work carried out in Hungarian institutions of higher education, thus helping Hungary in its efforts to become a regional centre of excellence in certain scientific fields.

During the selection procedure, priority will be given to applicants whose field of research is of great importance with regard to scientific and artistic life in Hungary, and to those who already have experience in conducting joint research with the institution that would host them.

This year, 10 fellowships, each worth one million Hungarian Forint monthly for a maximum duration of 12 months will be awarded. Applicants must hold a PhD, live and work outside Hungary and be recommended by two internationally known scientific personalities.

Applications must be submitted by 26 April 2002, and successful applications will be announced in September 2002.
