Bar Council warning over law degrees
The Bar Council has warned that it may no longer recognise university law degrees. Nigel Bastin, head of education for the Bar Council, said the council formally recognised law degrees based on the Quality Assurance Agency's rigorous course inspections. But he said that John Randall’s resignation this week as QAA chief, in protest against cuts in inspections, meant “this clearly can no longer be the case”. He said professional bodies would have to introduce their own university inspection regimes.

Westminster School tops table
Westminster School has topped the independent school A-level league table as last year’s winner, Winchester, slipped to second place. At university, however, state school pupils do better than those from independent schools with the same A-level grades, research from Warwick University has revealed.

Dunstaffnage marine centre wins £2.3m
The Scottish Association for Marine Science has been awarded £2.34 million from the European Regional Development Fund for a new Marine Research and Biotechnology Centre at Dunstaffnage, near Oban, in Argyll, Scotland. The cash is the final contribution towards the centre's £8.3 million cost. It will fund the updating of facilities at the existing Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory.
