Government sponsors 'brain gain'
The government has unveiled a £20 million scheme to retain the United Kingdom’s best science talent. Awards will be made directly to scientists, boosting salaries to more than £100,000 in some cases. The aim is to produce a “brain gain” in the UK.

Edinburgh honours Cubie
Andrew Cubie, whose report on higher education led to radical changes in student finances in Scotland, was today due to receive an honorary doctorate from Edinburgh University. Dr Cubie’s report prompted the Scottish Executive to scrap up-front tuition fees and introduce bursaries for undergraduates.
